“A simple smear test found my cancer early, and saved my life.”
In January 2015, Gayle Maxwell, then 39, booked her routine cervical screening test. With no symptoms, she expected nothing unusual. But the test revealed an aggressive tumour growing fast.
Because it was found early, treatment was able to remove all traces of the cancer. By October, Gayle was given the all-clear.
Gayle is sharing her story as part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. Now 50, and working for NHS Highland, Gayle treasures time with her three children, four grandchildren, and has another grandchild on the way.
Her message is clear:
"The smear test takes minutes, but can give you the chance to live well again. Don’t let fear stop you from going. Early detection can make treatment faster, easier, and more successful."
