St Mary's Hospice

St Mary's Hospice Thanks to our community we can continue to make a difference when it matters most At St Mary's care is provided free of charge, but it is not cost free.

St Mary's Hospice is the dedicated provider in South Cumbria of comprehensive specialised supportive and palliative care for people with advancing illness. Our facilities and services are available to all adults who are facing the end of life, and to their families, carers and the bereaved. Patients with life limiting illnesses are cared for at the Hospice, as inpatients or by attendance at day clinics or therapy sessions, and - increasingly - at home. We care for patients facing the end of life, regardless of diagnosis, and for those who love them. Patients and carers may access our holistic programmes, addressing physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, at any stage of an illness. Just to maintain our current services costs around £3.5 million a year.

On International Women’s Day, it feels especially fitting to say a huge thank you to the magnificent Grasmere WI and their wonderful supporters.

Motivated by Sue Dixon, they stepped out every single day in February--whatever the weather, wherever they were- to support St Mary’s Hospice.

Today we celebrate all the incredible women in our community who lead, support and inspire in so many different ways, helping to make our world a better place. Thank you for everything 💜 ☂️

Today we remember Joan Pollitt on the anniversary of her passing. Her vision and compassion helped shape St Mary's Hospice into the place it is today.

From a small group of people who believed South Cumbria deserved its own hospice, to the incredible community who raised funds to open our doors, Joan’s philosophy encouraged patients to “live for the moment.”

That belief still guides us today.

Generations of supporters have passed this hospice on stronger than they found it. By remembering Joan and the legacy she created, we’re reminded that every act of kindness helps secure the future of hospice care for our community.

💛 Joan's legacy lives on here at St Mary's, yours can too- help us to grow and care for generations to come.

Thank You Thursday 💜

💜 How lovely it was to welcome Barbara Birch, Eileen Senogles and Donna Mitchell from Scales WI to St Mary’s Hospice this week. A marvelous £1,611.14 was raised when Scales WI chose our hospice as their Charity of the Year last year!

Barbara, President, shared that the fantastic total was raised through a Spring dance, soup and pudding lunch, the sale of knitted teddy bears, a French evening, and generous corporate donations.

Thank you so much to all the wonderful ladies involved. Donations like this make such a difference to us, as less than 20% of our income is funded by the Government ❤️

💜 We’d also like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful volunteer Joyce. Not only does Joyce generously give her time volunteering on reception, at our dementia group and more, but she also creates the most beautiful crochet crafts– raising an incredible £686 last year! We are so lucky to have you, Joyce.

💜 Next up is marvelous Marnie from Yarlside Academy, who donated a fantastic £75 raised from her summer shop. Such a kind thing to do- what a superstar! ⭐

💜 Finally, lovely Janice Callister visited St Mary’s Hospice earlier this week to present us with a cheque for a fabulous £400. Janice recently celebrated her birthday and kindly asked guests to make a donation to the hospice instead of bringing gifts. What a thoughtful gesture for such a great cause. We hear it was a wonderful celebration, and no surprise, as Janice is such a lovely person! 😊

If you, like Janice, have a birthday, anniversary or special occasion coming up and would like to ask for donations instead of gifts, we’d love to hear from you.

These gorgeous ladies from Sue Park and Dawn Attwood Slimming World Millom & Barrow visited St Mary’s Hospice with yet another incredible donation of £2,000 💛

Dawn Atwood said-
“St Mary’s Hospice is our chosen charity. We have now held our charity ball for 7 years and raised over £14,000 for St Mary’s. As well as raising much needed funds, each year we celebrate our members’ successes – and what better way than getting dressed up and spending a great evening together around the festive season. Abbey House Hotel is our chosen venue and the food, staff and surroundings are always amazing. We are looking forward to this year’s event already.”

Thank you so much, Sue, Dawn and all the other ladies who helped on the evening. – we have to say, you all look fab-U-lous ❤️
