St Mary's Hospice

St Mary's Hospice Thanks to our community we can continue to make a difference when it matters most At St Mary's care is provided free of charge, but it is not cost free.

St Mary's Hospice is the dedicated provider in South Cumbria of comprehensive specialised supportive and palliative care for people with advancing illness. Our facilities and services are available to all adults who are facing the end of life, and to their families, carers and the bereaved. Patients with life limiting illnesses are cared for at the Hospice, as inpatients or by attendance at day clinics or therapy sessions, and - increasingly - at home. We care for patients facing the end of life, regardless of diagnosis, and for those who love them. Patients and carers may access our holistic programmes, addressing physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs, at any stage of an illness. Just to maintain our current services costs around £3.5 million a year.

This year marks a special moment for us. After 36 years of caring for patients and supporting families, we are gently extending our reach and bringing our Light Up a Life service to Grasmere for the very first time.

This beautiful service is a chance to come together, pause, and honour the memory of someone special. Whether you have a personal connection with St Mary’s Hospice or not, everyone is welcome. Light Up a Life has always been about community, love, and remembrance — and we are so proud to share this with the Grasmere community.

Join us next Wednesday, December 3rd
Let’s gather, reflect, and light up the evening in tribute to the people who continue to live on in our hearts.

We hope to see you there.

It was such a pleasure to received a cheque for a fabulous £1,000 last week at St Marys in memory of Steffs (Stephen Stefforrd) The Angling and Hiking Open Beach Competition was organised in collaboration with the Cumbria Sea Anglers Club and despite the weather being absolutely dreadful, over 41 anglers took part from near and far. Steffs was a very well known and very well respected man to so many people. No wonder this fabulous donation was made in his memory. Thank you to Claire Errington from Angling & Hiking Centre Ltd Barrow, Sheralyne Stamp from Cumbria Sea Anglers Club and Mark Strefford, Steffs brother for meeting Heidi, our Area Fundraiser, It was so lovely to hear that all St Marys Hospice will be their Charity of the Year next year. Thank you so much 💜 💜 💜

Wow! We are absolutely delighted to announce that Heidi, our Area Fundraiser, received a fabulous donation at the Keswick to Barrow Walk presentation night for £51,000. 😀 We are so grateful to all our walkers who participated in the K2B and the C2B walks earlier this year. Your tremendous support enables to to provide dignity, care and support to our patients and their families during such difficult times.

A BIG thank you to everyone involved in organising this wonderful event. This donation will go directly to help and support our local community.

Please keep your eyes peeled for updates and mark your calendars for Saturday 9 May 2026 when we would be thrilled if you would join our team. Thank you all so much.💜 💜 💜

✨ Thank You Thursday ✨

This week, we’re celebrating two groups of fantastic fundraisers who have gone above and beyond for St Mary’s Hospice! 💙

What a pleasure it was to meet the lovely ladies from Barrow WI earlier this week. Lots of coffee, delicious cakes, raffle tickets, must have been sold to raise a staggering £1,500!
We really appreciate the support this wonderful group gives St Mary’s — and we’re delighted that they have chosen us as their Charity of the Year for 2025 🌼

And more amazing news…
A HUGE thank you to The Laurel and Hardy Museum and everyone who joined the celebrations for the grand unveiling of the new plaque marking Stan Laurel’s birthplace! 🎭
During the event’s auction, an incredible £259 was raised in support of St Mary’s Hospice — how brilliant is that?!

Your generosity means so much, and it’s wonderful to see our community come together to honour a comedy legend while supporting vital local hospice care 💙

8 out of 10 patients have their care funded by our community — meaning every donation, every coffee at the Orangery Café, every purchase from our shops, every lottery player, and every gift in a will truly keeps St Mary’s here for local families.

🌼 Join our community and help provide care, comfort and compassion.
