Our very own Co-Director Michael…. ☺️

Introducing Michael your walk leader for Buttercups and Daisies, A Way with Words and Heathlands and Hedgehogs 🌳

"I’m Michael, a life and wellbeing coach/practitioner and business owner of WalkWild Wellbeing, https://bit.ly/4aYOr5G and a co-director of Wild With Wheels CIC, https://bit.ly/4hWSPEN, with over 15 years experience of working in statutory and community social care and mental health settings.

I am also a North Downs Way and GeoPark Ambassador, for Kent Downs National Landscape, one of the 46 protected, scenic, and environmentally significant areas across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Covering roughly 18% of the UK, they are designated to conserve natural beauty, support biodiversity, and offer recreational value to the public.

It’s exciting to be returning for my 5th year of the Heart of Kent Walking Festival, with 3 wellbeing focused walks, an annual favourite as we visit Linton and Buttercups Goat Sanctuary, and two new ones, raising funds for Thorne Hedgehog Rescue, and the third one a poetic celebration of the beautiful countryside and views right on our door step.

As WalkWild Wellbeing, “Wellbeing Without Walls” has become my tagline, because I have personally experienced within myself, and the clients and groups that I have supported, led or walked with, the many benefits that simply being out in nature provides, both for our physical and mental health and wellbeing.

I / we don’t just walk, we mindfully interact with the things we come across, whether it be the opportunity to learn something new, share a story or quiet mindful moment, jump through a muddy puddle, try out a rope swing we find hanging from a tree bough, or marvel at the discovery of a plant or rare fungus we’ve never seen before; we are there to soak it all up and find the wild and creative that is within us all, but often just needs a safe environment, and the inspiration of nature to awaken it.

I encourage you to come and experience nature and our wild open spaces, as it was created to be.
I look forward to walking with you."

For World Wildlife Day (3rd March) and every day is a a day to enjoy nature and wildlife living in urban and rural areas.

If you have a garden, or wild space nearby, take some time to observe and listen. Even if your closest wild space is a window box with pollinator attracting plants and flowers…

The best garden attracts wildlife. It may appear messy but nature isn’t tidy, it provides habitat, nests, dens, places to hide from predators or the elements.

Wildlife may fly, crawl, wriggle, with wings, legs or no legs to propel itself along.

Are they hatching, resting, feeding, finding a mate to reproduce or are they communicating with others in their species or warning of danger?

Are they native, or migratory? Do they survive the winter or hibernate?

Our fellow earth creatures are fascinating, with complex lifecycles, communities and roles within the food chain.

Pollinating, predators, herbivores, seed spreading, fertilising and breaking down dead plants and animals and pond life.

Wildlife play a role in our (human) wellbeing too, with birdsong and providing the building blocks of a fertile landscape.

Happy International Wheelchair Day - March 1st

Celebrating all the wonderful wheelers and their trusty wheeled devices ♿️

Wheelchairs bring independence to those who can self propel or manoeuvre electrically.

Attendant controlled Wheelchairs move their occupants to new locations and destinations.

Wheelchair, mobility scooter and adapted cycle designers help towards bringing equity of access to all terrain, coastal, mountains, woodland, meadows, and even stairs these days.

Prescription wheelchairs assist with all day comfort. Bringing heat, massage, reclining, leg support, lay flat, stand up and cushioned positioning.

Technology allows for independent controls by finger, limb, eye movement, tongue or even breath.

Wheelchairs need celebrating, and given the space and appreciation that they deserve.

Wheelchair users give gratitude for these devices which offer a temporary or permanent replacement for legs which are unable to support/ balance or mobilise.

Wheelchairs support all ages, all shapes and sizes. And conditions which manifest from birth or are acquired through illness or accident.

Wheelchairs can charge your mobile phone, hold an assisted device to speak, carry crutches and walking aids or even water bottles.

At Wild with Wheels CIC we encourage all wheelchair users to access their local wild spaces, to benefit physical wellbeing and mental health. We raise awareness and visibility of wheelchairs in nature.

We also thank all our members, wheelers, followers and supporters who have been a part of the wild wheeling movement.

For the next 2 weeks a new Changing Place Toilet is being installed at Trosley. This is funded by the DEFRA access for all fund through the Kent Downs National Landscape team. These toilets are fully accessible facilities designed for people with specialist needs. They are already in place at Shorne Woods Country Park, Brockhill Country Park and Lullingstone Country Park already as part of a wider programme if access improvements funded by the Kent Downs National Landscape.

This fund has also enabled the path surfacing improvements at Trosley to enable better access for all throughout the year.

Trosley Country Park and Shorne Woods provide accessible access to the North Kent Woods and Downs National Nature Reserve so more people can enjoy this nationally important landscape.

We apologise for any disruption during these works.

Join us for an accessible Roll and Stroll around this Cross Channel Geosite at Brockhill Country Park at Hythe, Kent on Wednesday 11th March.

We will take the picturesque route down the accessible path and offer support for wheelers navigating the steep camber down to the lake. Where we might be able to see the toad tadpoles at the waters edge.

♿️The route is best for wheeled devices suited for All Terrain but we can offer assistance to ensure everyone navigates along the route safely.

There are benches along the route to rest for those with mobility limitations. (About 1.5km with one steep section)

We will learn about the Cross Channel Geo Park too and its similarities with Geo Sites over the water in France.

Accessibility
Brockhill Country Park has a Changing Places and disabled accessible toilet. There are 2 Blue Badge parking spaces.
The car park has paid parking or sign up for an annual Blue Badge Season ticket for all the 9 Kent Country Parks.

It was the Sense Sational event at Maison Dieu and Riverside Centre. And local Disability organisations were there to promote what they do.

Thank you to our Volunteers for hosting our stand. It was lovely to see .fundraising, , and

There were contributions from Astor College and Dover Grammar School for Girls. Along with the very helpful ambassadors.

It was lovely to meet new faces and learn a bit more about the history of Maison Dieu and Dover. Every time we visit we learn a little bit more.

If you didn’t get to go today then do visit soon or get in touch with the local disability groups to show your support.
