:: WOMEN WHO LIFT WEIGHTS ::
Benefits of resistance training for women are becoming more and more recognised, known and published. Encouraging women into the gym and to lift weights is one of the reasons I became a personal trainer almost 30 years ago, at a time when women would use the cardio machines and adductors/abductor machines if anything if they dared stepping into the gym and the male dominated weights area.
Nowadays, younger generations of women are so much more keen to lift weights, build muscle, which is fantastic!
However, there is still resistance , fear or even refusal from the women of my generation & above so age 50+ even women in their 40s (exc. if from sports/athletic background) to lift weights & lift what they consider to be heavy weights for them.
I still hear today: “I don’t want to look bulky”, “like a bodybuilder “, “like a man”, “I don’t want to have big muscles” etc, yet they often want to look more defined, loose belly fat, gain strength, stop pains in knees, hips, back and shoulders, prevent osteoporosis etc
There is still a misconception about how much training, dedication & discipline is required for women, especially in that age group, to build bulk! SO if you want/need to build big muscles then get ready to put the work & hours in. BUT if you’re looking to feel stronger, change body composition ⬆️muscle & ⬇️ fat,⬆️ your metabolic rate, ⬇️ muscle wastage and bone loss caused by the ageing process and hormonal changes➡️LET GO OF FEAR of getting bulky or building big muscles if that’s what’s stopping you, as it is unlikely that you’ll train enough hours and lift heavy enough to get to that. BUT get ready to lift heavy enough to fatigue without compromising form/technique, tweak your macros and use CV training to your advantage
