Some clients focus on tight tolerances.
Others care most about surface finish.

And then there are the projects that demand both.

This component is a good example. Critical dimensions held to high tolerances. Specific surface finish requirements on key features. All within the same part.

On top of that, the geometry is symmetrical. That might sound simple, but in production it adds complexity. When both ends look identical, controlling orientation through machining, inspection and finishing becomes far more demanding. Clear process control, robust fixturing and disciplined quality checks are essential to make sure the right features receive the right treatment every time.

This is where experience in mass manufacturing really matters.

Producing one perfect sample is one thing. Producing thousands, all within tolerance and all meeting finish requirements, is another. It takes repeatable processes, capability studies, detailed inspection plans and a team that understands how small variables scale quickly in volume production.

High tolerance. Controlled surface finish. Symmetrical geometry. Manufactured at scale.

This is the kind of challenge we enjoy solving.

Reliability and consistent quality are why we are trusted to produce this part year after year. But if you look closely, you can see small evolutions. Tiny process improvements that reduce production time while increasing reliability and repeatability in the final product.

Either way, the machine we have been posting about for a while is now up and running!

We would have shared this sooner, but first we had to solve a small issue where harmonic resonance turned the bar and part into a rather impressive tuning fork. Once that was dealt with, almost everything behaved itself.

Fortunately there were no lightning storms involved, just hard work and a fair bit of head scratching.

Our new SB 16III is finally settling into its place on the factory floor. We have shared a few updates already but this timelapse shows the moment it all came together.
This machine will let us run certain jobs faster than our current setups which helps us keep costs down and stay competitive for our friends and colleagues.

West End Precision Expands Capability with New Star SB-16III Investment

West End Precision, a multi-generation family-run manufacturer, has reinforced its commitment to high-quality British manufacturing with the arrival of a new Star SB-16III at its state-of-the-art engineering facility. The investment supports the company’s ongoing strategy to expand capability, improve efficiency and equip its skilled team with the latest technology.

Specialising in precision-engineered volume components, West End Precision continues to focus on the values that define its success: exceptional quality, British manufacturing excellence and continuous investment in both people and machinery.

The new SB-16III brings impressive versatility in a compact footprint, with a 10,000 RPM main spindle and micron-level accuracy ideal for high-volume, tight-tolerance work. It will allow one of the company’s key products to be produced complete in a single operation, removing the need for a secondary process and delivering tighter tolerances, greater consistency and faster cycle times. Its reduced travel distances also minimise non-cutting movement, further boosting productivity.

This is the fifth Star machine in West End Precision’s growing lineup, reflecting a long-standing trust in the brand’s reliability and performance across demanding applications. Star machines play a critical role in the company’s capability and versatility.

Steve, the company’s Star Setter, said: “The high-pressure coolant will boost our tooling life while letting us run at optimum speeds. The reduced machine travel keeps everything tight and quick, and the faster cycle times mean we’ll get more parts out the door than ever.”
