With the cold, bitter weather fast approaching, we want to share a couple of small tips and tricks to help our staff and service users stay safe this Winter ❄️

For service users: make sure you wrap up warm! Always wear an extra layer, and remember hats, gloves, boots and scarves when going out in this weather. Also, keep your skin well moisturised! The cold often dries out skin more than usual, so ensuring you are regularly applying moisturiser helps to protect your skin from cracks and breaks. Treat yourself to a couple of extra hot bevs (tea, coffee, hot chocolate – whichever you prefer) and look into buying yourself an electric blanket 🫖☕

For staff: make sure you are also wrapping up warm and always wear sensible shoes. Warm boots with a sensible sole are your best bet to prevent slips and falls. Carrying some de-icer is another extremely useful tip, as this helps with visibility through your car windscreen, as well as accessing homes easier. Finally, investing in some Winter tyres for your vehicle is extra important – they may be a bit more expensive, but truly make a huge difference when driving in more difficult conditions 🚗

Your safety is always a priority, so remember some of these tips for a safer Winter season! ⛄

Martyna, our Business Services Assistant, sat down with one of our wonderful clients Marjorie, who shared some truly fascinating stories from her childhood during World War II ❤️

Marjorie remembers a warm Sunday in September of 1939 starting out as an ordinary day. As the eldest of 4 children, Marjorie was asked to play outside with her siblings while her parents waited for an important radio broadcast. At 8 years old, Marjorie was a curious child, so once outside, she snuck by the window and listened in. It is then that she heard the dreaded words:
‘And therefore, we are at war with Germany’

Marjorie admitted it was a difficult concept to grasp as a child, and said many children were not aware of the true devastation that was occurring due to the world war. Living in a rural village in the Peak District, Marjorie also recalls the day that ‘evacuees’ arrived at their village. She said everyone was ever-so curious about what these ‘evacuees’ would look like, so one can only imagine the village children’s shock when the evacuees looked just like them: regular kids!

She also recalls the blackout period during the war. She remembers her mother making curtains, and her father making shutters, as homes were not allowed to show any light as to not become bombing targets. Marjorie fondly remembers how ‘you could see a million stars’ in the sky due to the lack of manmade light.

Marjorie also shared one incident where her and her friends were playing in the woods, when they suddenly heard a plane making a ‘funny noise’. She recalls the plane flying so low, they could see the pilot’s face; it was a German plane flying just some tens of metres above them. Marjorie recalls her and her friends jumping into a field once they saw this – a decision she now looks back on as slightly ridiculous, as the field left them in full view of the passing plane!

Marjorie’s uncle was a soldier in the war – she holds a letter received from him, which she has also kindly allowed us to share.

A huge thank you to Marjorie for sharing this with us – a reminder that everyone has a story worth listening to 📖

What is ‘Movember’ and what does it raise awareness for?

Movember is an annual event in which men grow out their moustaches! 🥸 Its goal is to raise awareness for men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, men’s mental health, and generally encouraging men to get checked out, sooner.

When our Managing Director Kate worked as a Registered General Nurse in Manchester, she saw firsthand the number of preventable injuries, disabilities, and even deaths from ailments that could have been caught much sooner. Unfortunately, there is still a widespread culture of men being encouraged to ‘toughen up’ rather than getting themselves checked out.

The Movember Foundation have been incredibly successful in their missions and fundraising, but there is still a long way to go! Remember – listen to your gut and get yourself checked out regularly. There is no harm in going for a check-up at the doctors! 🩺
