What drugs are students taking during the pandemic? 💉💊

National lockdowns are not holding students back from using drugs according to The Tab's 2020 Drugs Survey, which was answered by 16,017 students across 14 different universities including Bristol, Sheffield, Exeter, Birmingham and Glasgow 🎓

The survey found that while generally, students deny they have individually been doing more drugs since the pandemic started, 55% of respondents believe other students are doing more drugs since the pandemic started 📈

When it came to drug choice, the most common drugs used most often were (also shown in the image below):

🚬 W**d (Cannabis), 43.9%

⬜ Co***ne, 12.5%

🐴 Ketamine, 11.7% (a substance used in medicine as an anaesthetic for animals)

💨 Nitrous Oxide, 12.1%

🌈 Hallucinogenics, 7.4%

The survey also covered why students do drugs, with the three biggest responses being “boredom or distraction”, followed by “relaxation or self-medication” and “because others are”.

Does any of the above surprise you? Or is student drug use as well known as the general publics’ drug use? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Drugs & driving: It’s illegal to drive if either:
> you’re unfit to do so because you’re on legal or illegal drugs
> you have certain levels of illegal in your blood (even if they have not affected your )

Did you know?
• Most drugs stay in your system longer than – traces of some drugs can still show up in blood tests after 4-5 days.

• Exactly how long a drug remains in your system depends on the type of drug & variables like your age, weight, hydration levels & drug tolerance. Some heavy drug users will always have traces of drugs in their system.

• It’s an offence to drive with any controlled drugs above a specified level in your blood, even if they have been prescribed for you. Prescription & OTC drugs can affect your ability to drive. If you’re taking medicine & not sure whether you should drive, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or a healthcare professional.

• Taking alcohol & drugs together is even worse, as their effects combine & the risk can be multiplied. Even low levels of alcohol mixed with low levels of drugs can cause significant danger.

Since lockdown, there’s more cyclists, pedestrians & horse riders on the road.

If you use drugs (illegal or legal) - don’t put other road users or yourself at risk by .

Drug Driving in the UK 💊💉

Unfortunately, drug driving in the UK has been increasing in the past few years; leading to disastrous consequences.

Drug-driving offences in England and Wales were up by a fifth in 2019, according to the latest Government figures.

The key dangers of drug driving are:

📉 Impaired muscle movements: Your body moving differently to how it would sober could lead to dangerous driving movements and possibly a crash.

⛔ Involuntary reactions: A lot of us rely heavily on muscle memory and an engrained judgement built up over years while driving, drugs can impair this, leading to unpredictable results.

🧠 Altered emotional reactions: Driving requires a cool head, altering this could lead to much more than losing your temper.

Furthermore, remember that drug driving doesn't just involve the usual suspects such as ma*****na and co***ne; in 2016, 19.7% of drivers who drove while under the influence tested positive for some type of opioid.

ITS has a range of services to deter and prevent these dangers from creeping into your workplace, get in touch today to see how we can help ✉️

>Around 1 in 25 (3.7%) adults aged 16 to 59 had taken a Class A drug in the last year, which equates to around 1.3 million people.

>Among young adults aged 16 to 24, 8.7 per cent had taken a Class A drug in the last year.

It has been reported that 65.7% of adult drug users and 75% of illicit drug users (i.e. 17% of the total workforce) are employed.

It has been reported that during lockdown drug & alcohol use has been on the increase.

How are you managing these issues in your ? When was the last time you reviewed your ? When did you last do for managers & supervisors?

We can help. . Matt Taylor

Running red lights. Driving at high speeds. Crossing center lines into the other lanes. Getting into accidents - even hitting pedestrians. A new study found these were some of the dangerous driving behaviours of regular, heavy users (4 or 5 times per week) of recreational w**d who began using before the age of 16.

Here's the catch: users drove this badly even when they were no longer “high”.

At the time of driving experience, the ma*****na group had not used for at least 12 hrs.

Despite having little THC in their system, heavy users consistently performed worse on driving tasks than non-users, making critical, dangerous mistakes. And when they looked at the cannabis users & separated those into early (before age 16) versus later onset of use, almost exclusively these differences between the 2 groups were attributed to the early onset group.

Research has consistently shown that early substance use, including the use of cannabis, is associated with poorer cognitive performance - specifically tasks controlled by the most frontal part of the brain. That's also the part that controls our impulses, a major factor in appropriate behaviour choices.

And it’s not just driving. The same safety issues are seen in the workplace alongside other negative effects.
