WHY DID I DO THAT? WHY DO I ALWAYS DO THAT?
I WISH I DIDN’T ALWAYS DO THAT WHEN I AM STRESSED/UPSET/ANGRY/WORRIED/DISAPPOINTED…
SOUND FAMILIAR?
For some it might be insomnia; for others it can be drinking excessive alcohol; shouting a lot; crying for “no apparent reason”; literally pulling hair out; self-harm; comfort eating; OCD; psoriasis; IBS; nausea; panic attacks; procrastination; low mood; permanent “duvet days”…and the list goes on…
WHAT IS STRESS?
Stress is an adverse response to a situation, event, person, trauma etc triggering the part of the mind that keeps us alive – the SURVIVAL part - to kick in and take over.
If your brain thinks that your life is in some kind of crisis or danger, the SURVIVAL part of your brain WILL take over to "save your life". Your life may not be in actual danger but if you are FEELING under threat, angry or "attack" you will trigger your SURVIVAL part of the brain.
The SURVIVAL part of the brain has only 3 courses of action: ANGER; ANXIETY and DEPRESSION. So, STRESS is the response of the SURVIVAL part of the brain when triggered – it comes in many guises and can often be hidden to the sufferer and any onlookers.
To help break this cycle we need to “re-train” our brains: re-train our defaults to remain in our STRATEGIC part of the brain unless we really are in a life-threatening situation in which case we welcome our SURVIVAL part.
