Mental health, COVID, lockdown and a crap year?

As mental health first aiders, we’re seeing first-hand the problems that exists and our society just now. Recently we have hospitals saying there are more attempted suicides and overdoses then there are COVID patients in their hospitals, if this isn’t a warning, we don’t know what is.

Please download this coronavirus anxiety workbook and make use of and anyway you can to help with the mood and moods around your household.

Together we will get through this, take care of you and your loved ones.

A serious message for anyone thinking it's ok to just jump in for a swim.

A serious message for anyone thinking it's ok to just jump in for a swim.

LONG POST BUT IMPORTANT MESSAGE

It’s been a busy couple of weeks with lots happening in my business and personal life. Never a dull moment! But one event I feel strongly about is the loss of life of a young man who went for a swim in a loch in Lewis at the weekend.

The whole community were deeply saddened by this and our heartfelt condolences go to everyone affected including those who were involved in the rescue 💔

I am unaware of the full circumstances in this case but what we do know is he intentionally went for a swim, didn’t have a tow-float and wasn’t wearing a wetsuit. It’s my understanding he was a visitor to the Isles. With all that in mind it highlights the importance of stopping and thinking before you enter water you are not familiar with.

To anyone who looks at a large body of water in Scotland and thinks ‘I need to swim in there!’ STOP AND THINK PLEASE

1. Are you used to swimming in the sea or lochs?
2. Are you familiar with that body of water?
3. Do you know what’s underneath?
4. Will someone see me if I get into trouble?
5. Does anyone know where I am?
6. Am I confident in my abilities in cold water?

If you answer NO to ANY of these questions DON’T GO IN. You can make your swim much more pleasurable by being safe. If you’re inexperienced and you do go in without any safety equipment like a tow-float, wetsuit or means of communication STAY WITHIN YOUR DEPTH - ALWAYS.

It can take years to build up cold water tolerance to our waters. Cold water is defined as anything below 15 degrees Celsius in swimming. That covers just about every body of water in Scotland all year round, give or take some lochs in summer. Cold water immersion (if not done gradually) can cause cold water shock but also you can tire quicker as it uses a lot of energy. Your heart rate and blood pressure go up and sometimes you can hyperventilate if not used to it. Tiring easily can surprise you and can cause distress if you’re out of depth. Distress can lead to panic and panic can lead to drowning. Please don’t think it won’t happen to you. It can happen to anyone. Wearing a tow-float everytime you go swimming can provide a security blanket but also some visibility to other water users like boats etc. I always bring mine and it has pockets for my phone/radio.

If you want to enter the water for a dip or short swim and are not used to the area I’d recommend either not going in at all or following these principles:

1. Don’t go in alone
2. Enter slowly until your breathing calms
3. Splash your face (lots of thermoreceptors!) or submerge it a few times.
4. Practice floating on your back before swimming
5. Stay within your depth ALWAYS (you can swim in 1m depth you know!)
6. Swim along the shore not out

Don’t let the joy of swimming wild and free kill you. You can still have a wonderful experience if you stop and think first.

Just look at Malcolm’s joy 😊
