What’s the difference between a Humanist, a Celebrant, and a Minister?
Families often ask us about the different people who can lead a funeral service, so we thought we’d break it down simply 🤍
🔹 Minister
A minister leads a religious service. This is usually connected to a specific faith, such as Christianity, and may include prayers, hymns, readings from scripture, and religious beliefs about life and death.
🔹 Humanist
A humanist funeral is non-religious. It focuses entirely on the life, personality, and values of the person who has died, without any reference to religion or spirituality. Humanist services are personal, reflective, and centred on human connection and memories.
🔹 Celebrant
A celebrant offers a flexible, personalised service. Celebrant-led funerals can be non-religious or gently spiritual (but not tied to a specific faith). They often include stories, poems, music, and rituals chosen by the family to truly reflect their loved one.
There’s no right or wrong choice — only what feels right for you and the person you’re remembering. We’re always here to talk through the options and support you in creating a meaningful farewell.
