As a person’s dementia progresses, they will need more care and support, and there may come a time when they will need to be moved into full-time or residential care.

For many people, thinking about whether someone should move into a care home is one of the most difficult things they’ve had to do as a carer. You’re likely to feel a wide range of emotions that can be hard to deal with and can affect your decision.

A care home may be able to meet the needs of the person better or, they may need to move because something changes that then makes it difficult for that person to stay living at home.

It can be hard to know when the time is right for a person with dementia to move into a care home, and who should make the decision if the person cannot make it themselves.

We have lots of advice and things to consider when deciding whether to move a person living with dementia into full-time care.

‘I’ve just told you that’ is one of the seven things to avoid saying to somebody with dementia. It can be hard to answer the same question several times, but using a phrase like this will not help them retain information for next time, it’s likely to remind them of their condition.

It’s important to remember that the person can’t help repeating themselves and it’s essential that they feel heard and understood. Try to answer calmly and patiently, with taking a break if you feel it’s necessary to remove yourself from the conversation for a while.

A person living with dementia can find language and communication more difficult over time. Find out more about the words and questions to avoid when talking to someone living with dementia: https://bit.ly/3Kqy6Jz
