The first day case arthroplasty has been successfully performed at Mount Vernon Hospital, enabling a patient to have joint replacement surgery and return home on the same day.

Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure to relieve pain and restore the function of a joint - most commonly by replacing it with an artificial implant - typically used for hips and knees affected by arthritis or injury.

This new day case model aims to improve recovery times and patient experience. It involves close working between a range of staff including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, therapists, pharmacists, radiographers, recovery staff, ward clerks, and porters.

Janet Bartlett, the first patient to benefit from this new approach, underwent a partial knee replacement after experiencing significant pain due to arthritis

She said: β€œI was amazed at how smooth everything was and felt reassured that I would only go home if everything went as planned. Being able to recover in my own home made such a difference. I felt more relaxed, and the hospital team also contacted me a few times to check how my recovery was going.”

Well done and congratulations to everyone involved πŸ‘πŸ‘

πŸŽ‰ The Hillingdon Hospitals Children and Young People with Diabetes (CYPD) team are celebrating after being given a prestigious award for transforming patient experience for those with neurodiversity and mental health needs.

They won the Unsung Hero category at the Quality in Care Diabetes Awards, which celebrate excellence and innovation in diabetes care across the UK. πŸ†

πŸ‘ Judges praised our staff for listening to families and acting on feedback that highlighted challenges with their current service. The clinic environment, appointment length, and the number of professionals present were identified as barriers for some patients.

Our CYPD team introduced the following improvements to help ensure that their service was more inclusive and patient-friendly:
β€’ Minimising the number of professionals and ensuring consistency of staff caring for each patient
β€’ Removing the waiting room so patients are able to go directly into one room for the duration of their visit
β€’ A structured programme of health checks across the year
β€’ Tailored resources to support individual needs

Since implementing these changes, our team has received positive comments from service users.

Catherine Tapping, paediatric diabetes nurse consultant, said: β€œThis award recognises the heart of our work – creating a clinic where children and young people living with diabetes, neurodiversity and mental health challenges feel understood, respected and safe. We are incredibly proud as it reflects our commitment to shaping care around the individual needs of each young person." ✨

Today, we will take a moment to remember those who gave their lives in service to our country.

From 10.50am, staff, patients, and visitors are invited to join us in the Hillingdon Hospital chapel for a short service and two-minutes silence at 11am.

Let us honour their courage, reflect on their sacrifice, and carry their memory forward.

Lest we forget. Never forgotten, always remembered.🌹
