New data shows around 1 in 4 young people leave school without protection against HPV (human papillomavirus).

Left school? You can get the HPV vaccine at your GP practice until the age of 25.

Still in school? Catch-up is offered by SAIS (school-age vaccination) teams.

We are encouraging people to get their blood pressure checked, as estimates suggest that tens of thousands of people in the area may have high blood pressure without knowing it.

High blood pressure, often called the ‘silent killer’, rarely shows any noticeable symptoms but can significantly increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and dementia if left unmanaged. Regular blood pressure monitoring is one of the simplest and most effective ways to detect problems early and prevent serious health complications.

To make checks more accessible, community pharmacies offer quick, convenient blood pressure readings without the need for an appointment. Trained pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can measure blood pressure and provide guidance on next steps. Around 7,500 people a month currently use this service at pharmacies across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to check their blood pressure.

Our Chief Pharmacist, Neil Hardy, said: “Many people don’t realise their blood pressure is high until complications arise. By offering easy access to blood pressure checks, pharmacies play an important role in helping people stay informed and take control of their health.

“In addition to screenings, pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can help explain results, offer lifestyle guidance, and recommend follow-up appointments with a GP if needed.”

If blood pressure is found to be high, it may be suggested to have an Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitor (ABPM). Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is when your blood pressure is automatically measured by a device at regular points as you go through your normal daily life. Measurements are taken regularly for up to 24 hours.

Residents are encouraged to visit their local pharmacy to have their blood pressure checked and make monitoring a regular part of their health routine.

Your pharmacist can provide treatment or some prescription medicine, if needed, for seven common conditions - without you seeing a GP.

Think pharmacy first and get seen by your local community pharmacy team.

Dr Tom Bertram, local GP and our Clinical Director for Primary and Local Care, answers a few of the common themes that came up in response to our recent announcement about the extension of routine online GP consultations in this short video. He explains how:

- It offers patients an alternative way to get the appropriate care, which many find helpful and more convenient for non-urgent support
- This isn’t a replacement for face-to-face appointments and how it can benefit all patients.
- More people using online access where appropriate can free up time and improve access for more vulnerable or digitally excluded patients

All GP practices across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight will now provide their routine online consultations from 8.00am to 6.30pm.

The change applies to routine care only and not urgent appointments. A routine problem is something that does not need urgent attention today such as queries about medication, repeat prescriptions, sick notes, or ongoing health issues that can safely wait for a response.

Online GP consultations offer a convenient way for patients to contact their GP practice. They can be used for various reasons, including describing symptoms, getting advice, requesting prescriptions, and managing some conditions.
