2 truths and a lie...
Imagine a whole Summer with no sun at all
Imagine buying a designer handbag only to find out it's a fake!
Imagine going to a Pilates class and finding out you are not getting Pilates!
2 of those are sadly true and happen daily.
Let's chat spades...
A spade doesn't pretend to be a garden fork, it does a similar job but ultimately you get more on a spade than a fork, you get more work from a spade, you dig deeper.
So many people experiencing Pilates for the first time and they hurt themselves or it's so intense they are overwhelmed. Those people expected a PILATES class and unknowingly to them they got something very VERY different, or that turned up to an actual Pilates class and wondered where the squats were 🫨
Now imagine those people don't ever try it again with a knowledgeable teacher teaching the method as it was intended 😢
It's happened twice this week, 2 people injured or put off Pilates...
A story I'm hearing all to often 🤬
One in her late 20s wanting to follow the trend of Reformer Pilates classes only to get injured doing 'feet in straps'
Another mid 50s given intermediate exercises in a 'beginners flow' class, groin strain and totally overwhelmed by the reps and 'holds'.
Thankfully I administered damage control and have helped them find their confidence using the apparatus and both are thriving in their movement and mindset.
It's angering me that our industry is getting diluted, with excuses of progressive movement, this is what Joe would have done - at NO point did Joseph Pilates say do this to music, pulse incessantly, squat and lunge and have no precision or learn control.
And let's not be so presumptuous to speak for the ONLY master in this method, Joseph Pilates!
Pilates needs deinfluencing...we have a duty of care to inform. There's room for everyone doing their thing but let's start being honest, call a spade a spade, have some integrity and humility in what we are teaching, instructing and delivering to the public.
