MENINGOCOCCAL VACCINES
There are six groups of meningococcal bacteria - A, B, C, W, X, and Y. Vaccines are available to protect against these groups.

Meningococcal group B (MenB) bacteria are one of the most common causes of bacterial meningitis in the UK. A MenB vaccine is offered to babies as part of the routine childhood immunisation schedule. If your child missed any of their 3 Meningitis B (MenB) vaccines, they may still be able to have these up to the age of 2 years old. If you are unsure, please contact the surgery. A nurse will then review your child’s vaccination records and let you know if they are eligible.

The MenACWY vaccine is offered to teenagers aged 14 years old by the School Age Immunisation Team. If you/your child missed this vaccination you/they may still be able to have it up to the age of 25 years old.

For anyone up to and including 19 years old, please contact the School Age Immunisation Team on:

Heathfield 01273 696011 ext. 2080
Uckfield 01273 696011 ext. 4931

For anyone from 20-24 years old, please contact the surgery. A nurse will then review your vaccination records and let you know if you are eligible.

Cases of invasive meningococcal disease have been confirmed in Kent. Sadly, 2 people are known to have died. It's important to know the signs of symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia. Get more info from NHS.

Following the reported outbreak of penicillin-resistant invasive Men B linked to the University of Kent, we are receiving a high number of queries from patients who are understandably concerned about their risk of becoming ill from meningococcal group B (MenB) bacteria.

The identification of contacts at risk and the organisation of any prophylactic antibiotic treatment sits with UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) public health teams. Those at genuine risk will be contacted directly by public health teams. If you have not been contacted, you are unlikely to require prophylaxis. Please note, GP practices are not able to prescribe prophylaxis in response to this type of outbreak.

Any queries about eligibility for antibiotics should be directed to UKHSA Surrey and Sussex Health Protection Team at 0344 225 3861.

The MenB vaccine will have been offered to babies born on or after 1st May 2015. Most people born before this date will not have been offered the MenB vaccine through the NHS routine immunisation schedule and there is currently no routine NHS catch-up programme for teens or adults. However, public health authorities are offering targeted vaccination to residents of specific university halls in Kent. In addition, the MenB vaccine is also recommended for people with certain long-term health conditions who are at greater risk. These include individuals with no spleen, or a spleen that does not work properly, sickle cell anaemia, coeliac disease and complement disorders (an immune disorder). If you fall into one of these categories and are unsure if you have been vaccinated, please contact the surgery.

Symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia can include:

• A rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass
• Sudden onset of high fever
• Severe and worsening headache
• Stiff neck
• Vomiting and diarrhoea
• Joint and muscle pain
• Dislike of bright lights
• Very cold hands and feet
• Seizures
• Confusion or delirium
• Extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking

If you or someone you know develops symptoms of meningitis or septicaemia, seek medical help urgently by going to the nearest Accident and Emergency department or calling 999.

We’re very pleased to be able to offer COVID-19 Spring Boosters to patients registered with Wadhurst Medical Group who are:

Aged 75 years and older
Residents in care homes for older people
Aged 18 years and over with a weakened immune system

While GP surgeries are partially funded by NHS England, to recruit and retain staff and to continue improving and developing their services, they also need to generate additional income, for example through vaccination programmes. By booking your COVID-19 booster with us therefore, you’re supporting us to maintain and develop our services, so we can enhance patient care and continue to meet local healthcare needs.

Appointments with our Pharmacists Jonathan and Nigel will be available at Belmont Surgery on Wednesday 15th April and Friday 17th April. Those patients who have consented for us to contact them by mobile phone, will receive a text message containing a booking link within the coming days. Appointments can also be booked by phoning the surgery on 01892 783888 or walking into the surgery.

We are hopeful that our care home residents and housebound patients will be vaccinated during week commencing 20th April or 27th April. Exact dates will be dependent on vaccine delivery.

Important Update: Closure of Ticehurst Surgery due to leak
2.40pm, 12 January 2026

We’re sorry to let you know that Ticehurst Surgery is currently closed due to damage to the building. There has been significant flooding within the building which has caused damage to the reception area and clinical corridor. The extent of the damage means the building isn’t safe to enter and so we are not able to open the GP practice.

Patient care remains our priority and we are working hard to make sure you continue to receive the services you need.

Appointments: For patient appointments this week (week beginning 12 January 2026), we are arranging for clinics to move to Wadhurst Surgery. We will be contacting patients directly and will be able to discuss any accessibility needs. We are also working to identify other options for providing services locally and as soon as we can confirm plans, we’ll share an update.

Prescriptions: Any prescriptions dropped at Ticehurst Surgery before 8am on Saturday 10 January have been collected and the letterbox is no longer in use. A new red post box is available inside Ticehurst Pharmacy (Church Street) for prescription requests to be placed during pharmacy opening hours. Please do not post prescriptions through the pharmacy letterbox out of hours, as we cannot be held responsible for any breaches of your personal data. Please only use the box provided.

Please bear with us as our teams are working to put alternative arrangements in place for patients and we will contact anyone booked in, however if you do need to contact us please phone 01892 783888 or email sxicb-esx.belmont@nhs.net.

Along with these interim arrangements, please be assured that we are continuing our work to secure a new, longer-term home for the GP practice within Ticehurst.

We’ll keep you updated and will share more information as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and patience.

06/01/2026

Due to the cold temperatures and lack of heating in the surgery, for the safety and comfort of both patients and staff we have taken the difficult decision to close Ticehurst Surgery on a temporary basis for the remainder of this week.

We’ll review the position on a weekly basis and when the temperatures increase to acceptable levels, we will reopen.

Wadhurst Surgery will be open as usual and prescriptions will be collected from Ticehurst Surgery every two working days.

To speak to a member of staff at Wadhurst Surgery, please call 01892 7383888.

Important Patient Alert: Beware of Scam Phone Calls

The public is being urged to stay alert following reports of a new scam in which fraudsters impersonate receptionists and doctors in automated fake phone calls.

In these calls, the scammer may say that if you do not “update your records” over the phone, you will be removed from the practice list. They may ask for personal information, such as your address, NHS number, or bank details.

Please be assured:

✅ We will only call you from our official practice phone number – if you’re unsure, you can always hang up and call us back using the number listed on our website.

❌ We will never threaten to remove you from our patient list during a phone call unless our zero tolerance policy has been breached.

❌ We will never ask for your financial information.

What You Can Do:

If you are unsure whether a call is genuine, end the call and ring the practice directly.

Report suspected fraud to the NHS Counter Fraud Authority at: https://cfa.nhs.uk/report-fraud

We thank all our patients for their vigilance. If you have any concerns or have received a suspicious call, please contact us directly.

Stay safe!

You can report fraud against the NHS in England and Wales by using our online reporting form or calling our freephone line 0800 028 4060 (available 24/7).

Ticehurst Surgery Update

We are aware that there have been mixed messages regarding the future of Wadhurst Medical Group’s (WMG) Ticehurst surgery. We would like to apologise for any confusion and concern this may have caused for patients.

We want to reassure patients and the community that Wadhurst Medical Group (WMG) will continue to provide GP services at the Ticehurst site (Newington Court), as the current lease is in place until 2027.

Southern Housing (the landlord) has confirmed redevelopment plans for the site and for this reason we do need to identify a longer-term home for the practice. However, services will continue at Newington Court until a suitable new location has been identified, approved, and is ready to operate so that care to patients can continue.

Sussex Primary Care, who run WMG, is actively working to secure a new site for the practice within Ticehurst. We are grateful for the suggestions and support that have been offered by the parish council and the local community.

We will ensure patients and the community are updated as plans develop, however hope this clarifies the position and offers reassurance that GP services will continue to be delivered at Newington Court in the meantime.

22/10/2025

We wish to share some exciting news about a significant change to our appointment system that will improve the way our surgery delivers care to all our patients.

From Thursday 30th October we will move away from a “first come, first served” approach to an online Total Triage model, based on clinical need and urgency. This means that all appointment requests will be assessed by a GP led triage team before any appointments are booked, ensuring that everyone receives the right care, at the right time, from the right person.
