Today we’ve been celebrating our incredible maternity colleagues ✨

Thank you to each and every one of you for the skill, care and compassion you show to women, babies and families every day.

A big thank you to our PDEU colleagues for kindly donating items for the tea trolley, helping us treat our teams today, and to The Royal College of Midwives whose generous funding enabled us to create hampers for teams across maternity services.

We hope you’ve felt the appreciation today – you truly deserve it 💙

This week, Specialist Midwives Rachel Parker (Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust) and Rebecca Thomas (Paths, South West Yorkshire Partnerships NHS Foundation Trust) are raising awareness of maternal mental health, breaking stigma, and reminding women and families that they are not alone.

They’ll be visiting children’s centres and maternity and gynaecology services across Wakefield and Kirklees to create safe spaces for conversation and to share information about support following pregnancy, birth and baby loss.

Maternal mental health matters and compassion, listening and connection can make a powerful difference.

💙 New mum, Mel Simpson, has praised our Smokefree Pregnancy Team for the support that helped her quit smoking during pregnancy and stay smokefree after the birth of her baby boy, Oliver.

Mel says she felt encouraged and empowered every step of the way – and now hopes her story will inspire others to seek support and know that quitting is possible.

👇 Read Mel’s full story and find out how our team supports women and birthing people to become smokefree in the comments below.

✅ This impact is reflected in our smoking at the time of delivery (SATOD) rate of 5.5%, below the national target of 6%, demonstrating the real difference this support makes.

We’re delighted to share that our Neonatal Unit has been awarded UNICEF Baby Friendly Initiative Stage 2 accreditation 🤱

This recognition reflects the dedication of our neonatal team to providing high‑quality, compassionate care that supports babies, parents and families, and promotes best practice in infant feeding and early relationships.

Very well done to everyone involved, particularly Zoe Roper, Infant Feeding Specialist Nurse, Catherine Weaver, Neonatal Unit Manager, and the Neonatal team, whose dedication, expertise and hard work have been central to reaching this milestone 👏💙

New babies have a strong need to be close to their parents. Being held, cuddled and comforted helps babies feel safe and loved - and supports their growing brain.

Skin‑to‑skin, smiling, talking, and responding to your baby’s needs all help release a hormone called oxytocin, which supports emotional wellbeing and healthy development.

This short video explains why bonding is so important, and how small, everyday interactions can make life easier for both you and your baby 💙

This , Lucy told us: “I would like to thank each and every person on the labour ward following the birth of my first child, Delilah Jayne, born 23rd January at 11.22am at Pinderfields Hospital.

"Everyone made me feel so comfortable and at ease during my water birth. We had to stay over for some observations, but we were looked after with refreshments and food throughout the night/early morning. The team are amazing and have the patience of saints.”

Yesterday we were delighted to welcome entertainer Dazzling Darren back to Pinderfields Hospital's Gate 46 for his monthly magic show ✨

The children had a lovely time, and James was especially pleased to see Darren again. He always enjoys the magic shows and looks forward to them when they take place during his time on the ward.

At a previous visit, James asked Darren to make a balloon version of the wand from Room on the Broom. Yesterday’s challenge was Billy Bob the Bear from Chuck E. Cheese, and James was thrilled when Darren rose to the challenge!

Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Moments like these can really help brighten hospital visits for children and families 💙

We’re supporting a national research study exploring the experiences and support needs of people who have experienced pregnancy loss before 24 weeks.

If you're 18 or over and have experienced pregnancy loss within the last 24 months, you may wish to take part in an anonymous online survey. What you share will help researchers understand what support is most helpful after pregnancy loss.
