π A Christmas Eve to Remember at Hesslewood House π
Christmas Eve began early at Hesslewood House Care Home in Hessle, as we were honoured to be featured live on BBC Breakfast, marking 80 years since the first Christmas after the end of World War II.
A few weeks ago, we welcomed BBC Breakfast journalist Jayne McCubbin, who spent time listening to the deeply moving stories of seven of our residents β affectionately known as the Secret Seven: Eric, Fred, Shirley, Audrey, Lynn, Jean and Anita.
They shared memories of growing up during the war, the devastation of Hull β where more than 95% of homes were destroyed or badly damaged β and the losses that shaped their lives. These were powerful, emotional accounts, told with honesty and courage.
This morning, those residents appeared again on BBC Breakfast, joined by the wonderful The Hessle Waits Choir, whose singing filled the home with warmth and emotion.
The choir truly made the morning for everyone. It was interesting to learn, via Hillary, that the choir eventually discontinued singing, coming back together in time for the Christmas of 1945.
There was conversation, reflection and pride as they spoke about their memories and the importance of preserving history through Hull Museums Reminiscence Department.
Christmas 1945 was very different to the Christmas we know today. It was a time of rationing, grief and rebuilding β but also of hope. Families travelled long distances just to be together. Food was scarce. Celebrations were modest. Yet peace had returned, and that mattered more than anything.
Listening to our residents reminded us just how much they have lived through β and how important it is to give space for these stories to be heard and valued.
For us at Hesslewood House, this wasnβt just a TV moment. It was a privilege.
A reminder that caring for someone also means honouring their life, their memories and their voice.
We are incredibly proud of our residents and grateful to the BBC team and the Hessle Waits Choir for making this Christmas Eve so special. π
