Hi everyone - a message from those who run who run Nostell Village Hall ⬇️

Hi all- on Thursday 26th Feb we’ve got Ian Womersley MBE (former West Yorkshire Police Defence Tactics trainer) giving a talk at Nostell village hall on general safety and defence tactics for women.
This isn’t a ‘Chuck your opponent on the floor and punch his lights out’ sort of session - more an education in sensible steps to ensure your safety when out and about.
The session starts at 7.30 and is free although there’ll be a collection box for the Air Ambulance for any donations you’d like to make.
Tea/coffee & biscuits will be available at half time.
Spaces are limited to the first 40

If you are wanting to attend, give me a message and I will pass it on 🫶🏽

As a physiotherapist and Pilates instructor, I don’t believe alignment cues are wrong.

But I do believe context matters 💡

For decades, there has been emphasis on neutral spine, core activation and “optimal posture.”
However, current research shows there is no strong or consistent evidence that posture alone predicts pain.

So why are we still focusing on this❓

Persistent pain is influenced by many factors including beliefs about damage, fear of movement and perceived threat.

When we constantly correct positioning with internal cues like:

“Engage your core.”
“Don’t let your pelvis move.”
“Correct your posture.”

We may unintentionally increase hypervigilance and guarding, particularly in people living with chronic pain.

Motor learning research also shows that external cues and imagery tend to improve efficiency of movement and performance more than internally focused cues

Meaning there are better ways we can cue to correct positioning and exercise technique❗️

This doesn’t mean alignment doesn’t matter.
It means over correction without reason may not help.

Let me know what you think down below 😌⬇️

Let’s talk alignment 👀

In Pilates, we often start (and cue .. a lot) in neutral.
Why? Because it’s generally comfortable, safe, and accessible for most bodies.
In group classes especially, neutral gives us a shared starting point, helping us find body awareness.

But here’s the important bit ⬇️
Neutral isn’t a “special” place.
And it’s definitely not where your body is expected to be 24/7.

The idea that we must always be in neutral, or that we need to have “perfect alignment”, can actually hold people back (and contribute to fear avoidance beliefs).

Life doesn’t happen in perfectly neutral positions we literally twist, reach, slump, rotate, flex, extend… all day long.

Good movement isn’t about staying still in the “perfectly neutral” shape.
It’s about being strong, adaptable, and confident in all positions.

So yes in Pilates we tend to start in neutral.
But Pilates is about learning how to move away from it, control through it and come back again, with strength and awareness.

Strong bodies are built through movement ❤️‍🔥
