Q: Do fluid tablets help lymphoedema? 💧
A: No, fluid tablets (diuretics) generally do not help lymphoedema, and do not form part of the recommended management strategies of the condition.
Why don't they work? Lymphoedema isn’t just “extra water.” It’s a build-up of protein-rich fluid (lymph) caused by a compromised lymphatic system. Diuretics act on the kidneys to remove water from the bloodstream, not lymph from the lymphatic system. Because of this, fluid tablets are often ineffective and can even make lymphoedema worse over time by causing the concentration of proteins, leading to thickening/hardening of the tissues.
Doctors may prescribe fluid tablets if there’s another cause of swelling alongside lymphoedema, such as heart failure, kidney or liver disease. In those mixed cases, they can help the other types of fluid retention but not the lymphoedema itself 💫
