The Self Care Management Team Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust - Walsall Manor Hospital and Community Health have been highlighting the importance of Self Care for both our physical health and mental wellbeing throughout this week to celebrate .

The theme this year is “Mind and Body”. We have been encouraging individuals to use this Self Care Week to help practice self care for a healthier, happier life and by incorporating self care into our daily routines we can significantly enhance our overall health.

Why is self care good for people?

Self care empowers people with the confidence and knowledge to look after themselves when they can, access health services when they need to, and encourages healthy behaviours that help prevent ill health in the long term.
Incorporating self care into your daily routine can significantly enhance your physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing.

Here are some top self care tips to help you prioritise your health.

Prioritise Sleep - Getting enough quality sleep is crucial for mental health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each night to improve mood, cognitive function, and overall health. Establish a bedtime routine and limit screen time before bed to enhance sleep quality.

Stay Hydrated - Drinking enough water is essential for physical health. Start your day with a glass of water. Staying hydrated can improve energy levels and cognitive function.

Engage in Physical Activity - Regular exercise is vital for both physical and mental health. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Outdoor workouts can boost self-esteem and reduce feelings of anxiety and depression.

Practice Mindfulness and Relaxation - Incorporate mindfulness practices such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga into your routine. These practices can help reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance emotional wellbeing.

Set Boundaries - Learn to say no and set boundaries to protect your time and energy. This is essential for maintaining mental health and preventing burnout. Prioritise activities that align with your values and wellbeing.

Meet Diana who is retired housewife and was let go from my work due to my health conditions. I lost a lot of confidence when I realised that I could no longer do what I used to do. I was so down in the dumps. Then I heard about the Self Care Management Programme, which was called Expert Patients Programme at that time.

I heard about this programme during a promotional event in Bloxwich. I signed up right then and I took the Generic Self Care Management Course in 2009. It was a turning point for me, as it showed me how I could take control of my life again. I now have the tools to live each day in control of my life instead of my health conditions directing what, when and how long I can do anything. When I finished my 6-week course, I decided that I wanted to help other people like me and thank the NHS for promoting such a fantastic course. I took the training and have been volunteering for 16 years and still love what I am doing with my life.

Volunteering has given me back my social aspect once again, as I get to work with great tutors and meet many participants that I work with when I deliver the courses. The participants have similar health issues to most of the tutors, so we totally understand exactly how they feel. Everyone shares tips during our break, at the beginning and end of the session, to help us manage our daily lives. By taking control and using all the tools I am able to do much more that I used to do. I have learnt different ways to do housework, gardening, etc. Self Care Management Team offers 4 different courses and they are all brilliant.

Meet Lorna, a volunteer who has walked the path of the Self Care Management Programme and experienced its transformative power firsthand.

My journey with Self Care Management has been nothing short of life-changing, and I wanted to share my story and the profound impact of undertaking a role as a volunteer and how it’s changed my life and overall mental wellbeing.

Self Care Management is about empowering individuals to take charge of their health and wellbeing. We do this through education, support and practical tools. We promote holistic self care that includes emotional and physical wellness, mental health awareness and practices to encourage social engagement within the community.

My journey with Self Care Management began in 2017, following a significant turning point in my life. After 21 years of dedicated service at the same school, I faced redundancy in 2016. This was a challenging period, especially after having suffered a stroke at the age of 35, which had already curtailed my career as a high school teacher and led to me to retraining as a learning support academic mentor.

Feeling lost and uncertain about my future, I was offered a place on the Self Care Management course. Initially, I was sceptical about how it could help me. However, after just a few sessions I was overwhelmed by the professionalism of the course tutors and felt I could easily relate with them as they too have been on their own self care journeys. I realised that the positive mindset and strategies provided were exactly what I needed to move forward. By the end of the course, I knew I wanted to give back by becoming a volunteer tutor.

I went through the vigorousness comprehensive interview and recruitment process and embarked on the training course which required a lot of commitment but that is to be expected when working in such a professional capacity. I enjoyed the intellectual and theoretical side of learning alongside the practical exercises and assessments that were required to deliver the Self Care Management Programmes.

I continued to benefit from the mental stimulation the role offers. It is always challenging as the groups of people we work with are always different. During the period of lockdown in Covid when we couldn’t work with groups face-to-face we had the new challenge of learning to deliver courses online using Teams. This was perhaps some of the most challenging times as using technology is not always easy but it is again rewarding. From being a detractor of online delivery I soon became one of the strongest advocates.
One of the most significant aspects of my role as a volunteer is the immediate connection I have with participants. Having been in their shoes, I understand the challenges they face on a daily basis and can offer genuine empathy and effective coping strategies. Seeing others in similar situations and helping them navigate their journeys has been incredibly rewarding.

Participants often see the course's impact on us as volunteers and feel motivated to embrace the same positive changes in their lives. Also, this shared experience within the group fosters a sense of community as they recognise, they’re not the only ones going through life living with health conditions and this builds trust, making our programmes even more effective. I am especially proud of the chance to follow up and see how participants are getting on after the courses end when they attend our ‘Friends of Self Care’ events.

Volunteering has kept me active, both physically and mentally. Preparing and delivering courses, and staying up-to-date with training, has been intellectually stimulating. Over the past few years, I’ve grown in confidence and self-esteem, which enabled me to re-enter the job market. After Covid, I found a part-time weekend job in retail, and last year, I had the courage to apply for a role within a school again as an exams invigilator. I am now happily engaged in two part-time jobs that bring me immense satisfaction and sense of own self worth and purpose.

I owe a great deal of my success to the wonderful Self Care Management Team. They have always encouraged and promoted the wellbeing of the team. We are more than just colleagues; we are a family that cares deeply about each other. I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of the NHS volunteer sector, and I highly recommend volunteering to anyone who feels lost, alone, or lacking in focus and energy. The rewards and recognition as a team are immense.

Volunteering for the Self Care Management Team has been a life-changing experience. It has provided me with purpose, fulfilment, and a supportive community. My journey has shown me that self care is not just about taking care of ourselves but also about extending care and compassion to others. It is a journey that will not only make a difference in the lives of others but also enriched my own life in ways you never imagined.

Meet Beenish one of our volunteers who explains how attending the Diabetes Self Care Management Programme truly changed how she managed her condition.

At first, the course seemed a bit complicated, but as the weeks went by, everything started to make sense. Over the six weeks, we had the chance to practice action planning and problem-solving techniques that really helped improve how I managed my diabetes on a day to day basis. Sharing experiences with a group of people facing similar challenges made the sessions even more motivating and supportive.

The course gave me the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take control of my diabetes and make positive, lasting changes. I now feel more proactive and empowered in managing my health, rather than feeling overwhelmed or uncertain. The self care techniques I’ve learned such as meal planning, regular monitoring, and stress management have become part of my daily routine and have made a real difference in my overall wellbeing.

Becoming a volunteer tutor for the programme was a natural next step for me. I wanted to share my experience of how I overcame obstacles while living with diabetes, and how I improved my management through problem-solving and action planning. Helping others realise that they can take small, achievable steps to make a big difference in their health has been incredibly rewarding. It’s also strengthened my own motivation and reminded me of the importance of self care in everyday life.
