With a wide range of ear drops available, it is important to understand the differences and when each type may be appropriate.
🫒Oil-Based Drops
Olive oil and almond oil drops or sprays are gentle, effective softening agents for earwax. They work by lubricating the ear canal, helping to prepare the ear for safe and successful wax removal. We typically recommend using these for a few days prior to your scheduled appointment.
💥Hydrogen Peroxide Drops
Hydrogen peroxide drops may create a fizzing sensation as they break down hardened wax. However, they can sometimes cause irritation to the delicate skin of the ear canal. For this reason, we do not routinely recommend their use, particularly without a prior ear examination.
💧Sodium Bicarbonate Drops
Sodium bicarbonate drops can be effective in softening stubborn or impacted wax in preparation for treatment or self-care. We advise having your ears assessed before using these drops.
⚠️ Individuals with a history of severe ear infections, previous ear surgery, eardrum perforation, significant vertigo, or other ear conditions should consult a medical professional before using any ear drops.
While ear drops can be a helpful first step in managing earwax at home, they may not always resolve a significant build-up or fully relieve symptoms without professional treatment.
If you are unsure which drops are most suitable for you, please get in touch — I am happy to advise.
