I've been treating some long term injuries over the past few months, and as well as the physical pain of the injury its also important to recognise the mental aspect these can have as well. It's about giving the client confidence in their recovery and establishing goals for them to come back fitter and stronger than they were before.

It's important to remember when working on strengthening the upper body following an injury, that improving stability in the joint is vital to prevent injuries from reoccurring.

I often get asked when do you use hot and cold therapy for an injury.

As a general rule of thumb use ice for an acute injury along with swelling and inflammation. Use heat for muscle pain or stiffness.

Heat is best used 5 days post injury. It works by improving circulation and blood flow due to the increased temperature. This can soothe discomfort and increase muscle flexibility.

Cold therapy is best used within the first 5 days of an injury and helps to reduce blood flow to a particular area, which can significantly reduce inflammation and swelling that causes pain.

Typical signs of a sprained ankle that should not be ignored include:
- Pain in the ankle joint
- Inflammation
- Bruising
- Unable to bear weight
