Know the qualifications of the ‘specialist’ removing your wax!

What view would you like your ‘specialist’ to have when removing ear wax from your ear?

There are so many things people need to consider when seeking ear wax removal. The view and magnification used by the ‘specialist’ to visualise the ear and ear wax, their expertise, qualifications and experience, and the level of training they have undertaken. Imagine someone not suitably qualified AND using head loupes, it’s simply a recipe for disaster.

With so many ‘providers’ of ear wax removal in the UK now, many of whom should be no where near an ear to begin with, this week alone in clinic has revealed just how poor UK standards and regulations are.

Unfortunately the people who suffer the most are the patients who put their faith in the person they are visiting.

This week I have treated patients where they were told they would need to use further ear drops for a week before the wax could be removed (only took me a minute to remove and with no additional drops), a case of someone who has sudden sensorineural hearing loss (which requires urgent ENT referral) who was discharged, and a child with Acute Otitis Media but was told they have earwax when there was none.

Worst still, some of these ‘specialists’ are charging the same and if not more than qualified Audiologists. Trying to make sense of it all…
