Flu is very much a problem for us all and it’s spreading quickly. Whether its to protect yourself over the festive period, protect others or playing your part in protecting vital NHS services and staff, please strongly consider wearing a face mask if you can in surgery or out.

Flu and respiratory infections are on the rise. From today, as a precaution, we’re advising the wearing of face masks in some areas of our hospitals including our Emergency Department. Masks will be provided - if you feel you are exempt, please discuss this with a member of staff.

Help protect yourself and others:
✅ Remember to only attend the Emergency Department if it's serious or life or limb-threatening
✅ If you are unwell, please don’t visit loved ones until you are feeling better
✅ Get your flu jab if eligible

This week is world antibiotic awareness week. Most of us do not consider the importance of antibiotics for keeping us all healthy. This might be knowing when and how to take them but also when NOT to use them.

Resistance to antibiotics is a problem growing globally and we see resistance to commonly used antibiotics on a weekly basis in our practice in Golborne. This is a problem in our community.

Not all antibiotic use is in health care settings however this is where we have most influence to make better choices as patients and health care professionals.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?
- Don't take antibiotics for colds and flu. These are the most common forms of infection and will not respond to antibiotics as they are caused by viruses which are not harmed by antibiotics. If you are struggling with cold and flu symptoms, please see the NHS advice or speak to your pharmacist.
- Never save antibiotics for later use. They should only be used for the infection that they are issued for. Taking them for other reasons may not help and may make things worse.
- When prescribed antibiotics, take them as directed by the health professional.

By using antibiotics responsibly, we can all play our part in keeping them working for us all.
