The Irish First Footing Tradition
In our family, we honour the old Irish tradition of First Footing.
The first person to cross the threshold after midnight on New Year’s Eve sets the energy for the year ahead.
It should be a dark-haired person — or the darkest hair in the house.
They leave the home through the back door, saying goodbye to the old year, its lessons and its weight.
They then walk around and enter through the front door, welcoming the New Year in with intention and respect.
As they cross the threshold, they carry three symbols:
• Coal, so the house will stay warm and protected all year (or a candle)
• Bread, so no one in the home will ever go hungry
• A small piece of change, so abundance and prosperity may find their way in
It is a simple act, but a powerful one — a blessing of warmth, nourishment, and plenty for the year to come.
Short Blessing
“With warmth, with food, with fortune fair,
I cross this threshold with loving care.
The old year leaves, the new draws near,
May peace and plenty bless this home all year.” 🍀✨
