Today is World Prematurity Day, a day to celebrate and acknowledge all the little superstars who made their way here a bit too soon.
Never underestimate the strength these little ones have, they may be small, but my god they are mighty! It's a different start to parenthood when your little one arrives early and spends time in NICU or SCBU. It's hard, lonely, and often terrifying. There is something about the beeps and noises of the machines that never leaves you. A type of resilience that preemie parents have to tap into, and it can be hard to adjust to 'normal', even once you're home.
Ophelia was born at 33 weeks, a tiny 4lbs 1oz, and spent almost 4 weeks in SCBU. She's 5 1/2 now and you wouldn't even know she was early. Sometimes I look at those early photos and my breath catches, or I hear a monitor beep and I'm right back beside her in SCBU. I don't know if that will ever go away, but I do know that she brings us incredible joy every single day and I'm so glad we live in a time where an early birth can be supported.
If you've had a preemie, you're in hospital with your preemie, or you've been told you will have a preemie - you're not alone. There are some incredible supports out there. We see you, and your tiny fighter ❤️
