What an inspiring day at the Research for Greener Surgery Conference in Birmingham! 🌍.

The stunning Great Hall was the perfect setting for thought-provoking discussions on how we can move towards a reusable culture in healthcare.

Key takeaways:

βœ… Behavioural change is critical: shifting mindsets is just as important as changing processes.

βœ… Global insights from Virginia Ledda showcased how different parts of the world are successfully transitioning to reusables.

βœ… Academic posters highlighted incredible sustainable projects across the UK- imagine the impact if these were shared nationally so trusts don’t have to reinvent the wheel!

One highlight for us was meeting a theatre manager from a private Birmingham hospital. She shared that three of her team already use our Theatre Badge Hats which were a gift from the AfPP in th summer, and they’ve seen real benefits of improved communication & no more throwing away disposable hats at the end of the day!!

A recurring challenge discussed was reluctance to home-launder reusables at the recommended 60Β°C, due to contamination concerns. One of the poster abstracts was a microbial study conducted on home laundered hats & the outcome suggested that centrally laundering them was advised.

Many attendees were delighted to learn that our hats can be centrally laundered, removing this barrier completely, whilst also ensuring every person, including students and visitors, are clearly identified.

It’s clear that collaboration and knowledge-sharing are key to driving sustainable change in surgery.

When hospitals consider moving away from disposable theatre hats, the conversation often starts with sustainability and cost. Disposable hats are not only wasteful but also misaligned with the NHS 10-Year Plan
