Last week, we welcomed BBC News to see the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Lung Cancer Screening programme in action 📸

In the last 5 years, the impact has been huge:

→ Almost 80,000 assessed for lung cancer risk
→ Of which 34,000 referred for a CT scan
→ With 830 cancer cases identified, 666 of which were lung
→ Additionally, over 1,200 people supported to stop smoking

Our teams are delivering life‑changing early detection. More than three-quarters of cases identified were at an early stage - when treatment is far more likely to be successful.

That’s exactly why this programme matters.

Barney Schofield, our Chief Commercial and Operations Officer attended on the day and said:

“The team across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw are doing incredible work every day, and it’s great to see that recognised. Most importantly, stories like Sandra’s show the real impact early detection can have, and why this programme matters so much to the communities we serve. It was fantastic to welcome the BBC to see our Lung Cancer Screening programme in action. ”

Huge thanks to everyone involved - and to BBC reporter Simon Thake for shining a light on the importance of lung health checks.

Do you know the comparison between MRI imaging and a loaf of bread? A question Victoria and Candice used to help students visualise how MRI imaging works.

Just like slicing a loaf, MRI creates images in thin, detailed layers - one ‘slice’ at a time. When stacked together, those slices form a complete picture of what’s happening inside the body, helping clinicians spot abnormalities more clearly.

We want to say a huge thank you to Victoria Fessey, Graduate MRI Radiographer, and Candice Hamilton, Apprentice Assistant Practitioner, for representing Alliance Medical at the The Grangefield Academy careers event.

The pair provided secondary school students with valuable insight into the field of radiography and the pathway opportunities we offer. They gave students a hands‑on look at radiography - exploring MRI scans and how we keep patients safe.

Victoria said:

“We took some MRI films with us (and some freebies!) and were really pleased with how engaged the students were. We had brains and knees to look at as well as other body parts, and we spoke to students about the different way we take images. With the right support and guidance, young people can start their radiography as soon as they finish school. Candice and I worked our way up in different ways, and university isn't for everyone, so I think it's important to show that there are other pathways available.”

Their interactive discussions sparked real curiosity and brilliant conversations around imaging, safety, and future opportunities, equipping them with the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about their future.

Great work both - and thank you to the school for having us!

Wrapping up , thank you to every apprentice, mentor, manager and tutor that makes our apprenticeship programme a success.

This year, we’re proud to celebrate some incredible milestones:

1. 60 clinical apprentices are currently progressing through our programmes.

2. We celebrated our first 5 HCPC‑registered Radiographers through our “Growing Our Own” pathway. These individuals have joined our graduate preceptorship scheme, with a further 12 radiographers due to qualify in the coming months.

3. Since we launched our apprenticeship programme in 2020, across 6 Assistant Practitioner cohorts and 3 Radiography cohorts, we’ve supported over 70 career journeys.

4. We utilise 98% of our Apprenticeship Levy every year - demonstrating our commitment to development and training.

By investing in our own people, we’ll introduce c.50 HCPC‑registered Radiographers in the next five years, strengthening diagnostic services across the UK.

Claire Eckersley, Strategic Workforce Partnerships Manager, said:

“We are incredibly proud of our apprentices and inspired by their growth, determination, and success. We also thank the managers, mentors, and academic tutors who support them every step of the way. By continuing to invest in accessible apprenticeships, we are opening doors to employment and building the workforce of the future by growing our own talent.”

Thank you to all!

Aleks Kacperska joined Alliance Medical Head Office as a booking administrator, and is now on track to complete a Radiography apprenticeship 👏 Read about Aleks journey!

"I joined in 2008 as a booking administrator, moving through different roles in Image Transfer and Logistics before training to be a Clinical Assistant on mobile MRI and CT scanners - I loved the patient-facing side of the job.

Being part of patient care made me realise I wanted to play a bigger clinical role and after five years as a Clinical Assistant, I completed the Senior Support Worker Level 3 apprenticeship, followed by the Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship and progressed onto the Radiography apprenticeship route. I’m really looking forward to qualifying very soon!

Fitting all this in means I am very busy and it takes a lot of planning, but it’s also been really motivating. What I like the most is that what I'm learning at university connects directly to what I'm doing in clinical practice, so it feels relevant and it makes sense in real life.

Day to day I am supported by the people around me. I've had guidance from experienced colleagues, regular feedback and the chance to practice my skills step by step under supervision. I'm always encouraged to ask questions, reflect on what I've learned and build confidence at my own pace.

Looking ahead, I'd like to continue growing within Alliance Medical, building my experience in CT and MRI, and developing the ways I can support patients. Long term I would love to support apprentices and share what I've learned to help them continue to deliver a service where patients feel informed, reassured and cared for."

Also, a huge thank you to the provider of our clinical apprenticeships, University of Cumbria 🧡

We’re kicking off Apprentice Wednesday by handing over to Louise Mason, who recently completed our apprenticeship programme 👏 Hear from Louise.

After successfully completing my apprenticeship, I am now signed off as a PET‑CT Radiographer, but the work continues! I’m an ambitious person who loves learning, and l’m looking forward to adding to my existing PET-CT skills by studying CT as well.

I am proud of my journey with Alliance Medical so far:

2017 - I joined AML as a PET-CT Clinical Assistant
2018 - Started a business diploma via BPP
2020 - Completed my business diploma and started the Assistant Practitioner course
2023 - Finished and started working as an Assistant practitioner
2024 - Top-up Radiography course
2025 - I qualified as a Radiographer and currently practice in Southampton PET-CT.
2026 onwards… learning CT!

A highlight for me was being able to gain experience in CT, MRI, X-Ray, and Ultrasound. It helped me understand the different procedures and pathways available at Alliance Medical. I learned how to communicate and care for patients across different services, alongside positioning and performing scans under supervision. Having all these experiences fuelled my desire to become a Radiographer!

The biggest challenge was balancing family life, work, and university. It helped to make a schedule of what work I needed to do, including plenty of time for family, and make sure I stuck to it.

I want to say a huge thank you to Alliance Medical and my manager, Carla! She organised my placements and helped me to manage my work time to enable me to complete my competencies. I have great colleagues who support me and guide me, and for that I am very grateful.

For , we caught up with Louise Stubberfield, MRI Mobile Clinical and Quality Lead, to understand the support our apprentices receive.

“In my role, I have a significant focus on learning and development, skill and competency programmes for our apprentices. We support our apprentices with a welcoming induction session to provide clarity on their role, the resources available to them, and what’s expected of them from the outset. We make sure apprentices are paired with the right mentor, and provide guidance to apprentices, mentors and their managers throughout the programme.”

Louise explains that support doesn’t stop once apprentices are in post.

“We oversee and track clinical assessment pathways with regular check-ins and ongoing communication with apprentices and managers. We also deliver presentations and ‘drop-in’ sessions to support learning needs as they develop in practice.”

We also asked: How do our apprenticeship programmes have a wider impact on teams and services?

“Apprenticeships allow us to develop talent from within through hands-on learning that reflects real clinical practice. Alongside clinical and technical knowledge, we see apprentices grow in confidence, communication skills and a real sense of belonging in the role. By providing clear routes for development and career progression we’re growing a workforce that is fit for the future.”

For those considering supporting apprentices by providing mentoring or training support, Louise says:

“Go for it! Successful apprenticeships rely on experienced team members providing support, knowledge and expertise. There is nothing more rewarding than being part of a learner’s journey, and to see the rewards of their hard work.”

Over the last decade, we’ve grown our national PET-CT network to improve access for hundreds of thousands of patients across the UK.

We operate 47 PET-CT scanners nationwide, providing 60% of all scans for NHS England; and delivering faster diagnoses and life-changing outcomes, when and where it’s needed.

Some recent service launches include:
→ Our static PET-CT at Oldham, the first within a UK CDC.
→ A new mobile PET-CT at St Barts, London - helping to strengthen local provision.
→ Going live with the UK's first Omni PET-CT on a mobile at Sandwell Hospital, Birmingham.

Alongside this, we manufacture and supply critical tracers from our five radiopharmaceutical production sites, supporting greater numbers of PET-CT scans across the country. Plus, we recently invested £10m in a state-of-the-art radiopharmacy that will accelerate the next generation of radiotracers and advance cancer, neurological and cardiac diagnostics.

We couldn't be more proud of our teams and the work they do to advance medical imaging and improve patient care and outcomes.
