Recently we had an article published in the Sunderland Echo regarding the lack of a memorial garden in Washington. We would love to hear your thoughts on this.

Would you like somewhere to scatter your loved ones ashes or even somewhere you can go that gives you piece and quiet to reflect on precious memories.

We know that we are surrounded by fabulous memorial gardens in surrounding areas, just not Washington.

Today, we pause to honour and remember the brave men and women who have served and sacrificed for our freedom. On this Remembrance Day, we remember the courage, selflessness, and valor of those who answered the call to duty.
At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we observe a moment of silence to pay our respects to those who gave their lives in service to their country. Their legacy lives on in the peace and liberty we enjoy today.

This week we have spoken about traditional funerals and today we would like to highlight direct cremation

At Deborah Mitchell Independent Funeral Services we think that a direct cremation should still have the same dignity and respect as a traditional funeral.

That is why we will provide a small floral tribute, use a traditional oak veneered coffin and transport your loved one in a traditional hearse to a local crematorium.

Private family service

We have noticed an increase in people opting for direct cremation and have found that some either don’t really know what this entails and/or don’t realise the impact this sometimes has on their loved ones. Some family members need to say goodbye by way of some kind of service for closure.

This doesn’t need to be a traditional funeral at the crematorium but at Deborah Mitchell Independent Funeral Services we can provide a private, intimate family service for up to 20 people in our designated ceremony room.

A celebrant is carefully chosen to carry out the service, following which, a few light refreshments will be provided as our family’s are never rushed out the door.

For those who choose to plan ahead, this option is available in our pre-payment plan service.

JOHN RIDLEY DODD

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce that John Ridley Dodd passed away peacefully after a short illness on 27th September 2025 at the age of 74 years young.

Beloved Husband of Denise

Much loved Dad to Kayleigh and John

Loving Father-in-Law to Kevin and Helen

Devoted Grandad to John, Amelia, Codie-Alan and Laycie-Mae

He will be greatly missed by all his family and was a great friend to many.

John’s funeral service will be held on Friday 17th October at 1:15pm at South Shields Crematorium, following which, John’s family would like to welcome you back to The North Biddick Social Club, Bonemill Lane, Washington NE38 8AJ.

Family flowers only has been requested. Any donations in lieu of flowers would be much appreciated in memory of John for Marie Curie.

SUSANNE DRUMMOND

It is with heartfelt sadness we announce that Susanne Drummond passed away peacefully on 30th September at the age of 62 years.

Much loved by Husband Karl.

Adored by her Sons Kristopher, Ross and Anthony as well as her Daughters in Law Sara, Victoria and Amy.

Loved dearly by her Grandchildren Oliver, Theo, Joshua and Charlotte.

Susanne’s funeral service will take place at Saltwell Crematorium on Tuesday 14th October at 11:15am.

Any donations would be gratefully received in memory of Susanne to St Bede’s Hospice.
