This isn’t just another conference.
It’s a space for lived experience, open conversation, and cultural reflection — where we reclaim menopause in racialised bodies.

I’ll be joining incredible speakers to explore how race, identity, culture and community shape the menopause experience.

Because menopause isn’t just a women’s issue — it’s a human one.

Why do we treat menopause like an ending, when it can be a beginning?

On 11th & 12th October, I’ll be at the Don’t Pause for Menopause Symposium in Buckinghamshire — leading a workshop on Relationships & Menopause and joining the speaker panel to share my lived experience of menopause as a South Asian woman.

Menopause is rarely just about symptoms. It reshapes identity, intimacy, and family life. In communities where silence is the norm, it becomes even harder to speak, seek support, or be heard.

Be part of the conversation and the change

When I first trained as a psychotherapist, I kept asking myself: “Where is the culture, the traditions, the South Asian voice?”

As a migrant and a brown woman, I noticed how curiosity about culture could do different things in the therapy room. At its best, it can create a ‘thinking space — a place of reflection for both client and therapist. A space where culture becomes part of the dialogue, not something left outside the door.

These reflections shaped the paper I’ll be presenting titled

“Beyond the Skulls of Our Colonised Ancestors – Reflections on Psychoanalysis and South Asian Culture.”

at the joint annual conference of Critical Psychotherapy Network (CPN) and Southern Association for Psychotherapy and Counselling (SAFPAC)

‘Decolonising psychotherapy and empires of the mind: Opportunities and debates’

Zoom Conference
27th September 2025
9:30 am for 10:00 to 5:30 pm

My paper asks critical questions that matter deeply in today’s therapeutic space:

👉🏽Can a therapist ever truly know all cultures?
👉🏽What does it mean to be culturally attuned and informed?
👉🏽When does curiosity risk turning into othering?
👉🏽What does it mean to be culturally attuned rather than simply “competent”?
👉🏽How can curiosity create a bridge of understanding for both client and therapist?

Through personal reflections, clinical vignettes, and post-colonial theory, I reimagine psychotherapy through a decolonising and cultural lens.

✨ Even when two people share the same culture and traditions, the sub-cultures within families can feel like different worlds.

💭 One partner may come from a family where love is shown through words and gestures, while the other has been raised where love is expressed through duty, sacrifice, and silence.

🌿 These unspoken differences can create tension and misunderstanding. But they can also be a space for growth, awareness, and creating a shared culture as a couple.

🗝️ The work in couples therapy is to move from “my family’s way” vs “your family’s way” → to “our way.”

❤️ Love becomes stronger when we honour where we come from and consciously choose where we want to go together.
