5 Common Mistakes Runners Make After an Ankle Sprain

Injury happens. The key is what you do next. Here are five mistakes we see with sprained ankles and how to avoid them so you get back running stronger, not sidelined longer.

1. Ignoring the sprain / going it alone
“A seemingly small sprain can still lead to instability and long-term issues.”

✅ Instead: Get a professional assessment early, know what you’re dealing with, then follow a plan.

2. Rushing back / skipping rest & protection
Trying to walk it off or resume running too soon puts you at risk of further ligament damage.

✅ Instead: Use the initial phase to rest, ice, compress, elevate (R.I.C.E) then gradually load under guidance.

3. Skipping rehab (strength, balance, proprioception)
“Simply letting time pass won’t be enough… treating the injury properly reduces the risk of re-injury.”

✅ Instead: Commit to rehab exercises (ankle strength, balance drills) until movement, strength and control are back.

4. Returning to running or sport too early or without checking mechanics
Your ankle may feel better before it’s ready. Sloppy movement + fatigue = higher risk.

✅ Instead: When you return, go gradually, start with short sessions, good form, stable surfaces and check your gait, stride, shoe-fit

5. Not addressing underlying issues (footwear, surface, weak muscles, technique)
Weak ankle stabilisers, worn out shoes or uneven surfaces increase risk of first or repeat sprains.

✅ Instead: Review your running shoes, terrain, biomechanics and include ankle/foot stability work.

At the Centre we emphasise the rehab phase as much as the initial treatment. Your ankle isn’t just “healed” when the pain’s gone, it’s healed when you can run, change direction, land and push off confidently without wobble.

Why should people with diabetes see a podiatrist?

If you have diabetes, caring for your feet is so important. Diabetes can reduce blood flow and sensation, meaning small cuts, blisters or infections can go unnoticed and lead to serious complications if not treated early.

Our experienced podiatrist Kathryn can help you:

✅ Check circulation and nerve health in your feet
✅ Manage corns, calluses and nail problems safely
✅ Spot early signs of infection or skin changes
✅ Give advice on footwear and daily foot care

Regular foot checks can help prevent serious issues and keep you confident on your feet.

👣 Book an appointment with Kathryn today because healthy feet are the foundation of whole-body wellbeing.

What is an Indian head massage?

The treatment involves massage to the upper back, shoulders, upper arms, neck, face and scalp.

This massage works on significant areas of the body. Especially the neck and the shoulders where stress affects major muscle groups, and it often
brings immediate relief.

Tensions are eased and fibrous knots melt away. The efficiency of the circulatory and lymphatic systems improves. As a result toxins are dispersed from tense muscles and flexibility and fluidity of movement is
restored.

Are you suffering with frozen shoulder?

Massage and stretching are extremely beneficial for treating frozen shoulder pain. It helps to relieve tension and tightness so your muscles can relax. This helps to restore mobility and may also improve blood flow to the affected area and reduce inflammation.

Symptoms include:

* You have shoulder pain and stiffness that does not go away.
* Pain can be worse at night when sleeping
* The pain is so bad it makes it hard to move your arm and shoulder

If this sounds like something you may be experiencing and would like some treatment please contact us on 01933 664444 / www.wollastontc.co.uk
