A stroke occurs when there is a disruption of blood flow to a part of the brain, either due to a blockage or bleeding in the brain. It is a life-threatening emergency, and immediate medical attention is critical to prevent permanent damage or death.

Your recovery will depend on the severity of the stroke and the parts of the body affected. It would include physiotherapy to improve movement, occupational therapy to help you get back to work and speech therapy if your communication is affected. Recovery is possible, the team involved will help you reach your goals.

You only have to walk a mile or 2 kms every day (that’s around 2000 steps) to reduce your chances of dying by almost a third i.e. 30 %. The chances of premature death or heart disease reduce significantly with the littlest bit of exercise – this includes incorporating exercise in your daily routine e.g. taking the stairs, walking to the store for some groceries, parking the car and walking in instead of driving thru – be intentional.

Recovery and Rest
Training + Good Nutrition + Rest = Increased Fitness. All three need equal attention to achieve your therapy goals, and while it’s easy to overlook, quality rest is important. Rest must be proportionate to the amount of effort involved in each therapy session. You will want to ensure that therapy doesn’t just become associated with effort, so taking it easy during some sessions would go a long way in preserving the association between therapy and ‘eager for more’.

The Helicopter view
As the helicopter takes off, getting higher and higher, it sees a bigger and bigger picture, and is less involved with the detail at ground level.

So, reining in emotions although extremely difficult in any stressful situation, responding instead of reacting, keeping the long-term rehabilitation goal in mind and taking small steps every day will help achieve the outcome.

As in the words of Jenn Drummond; world record-holding mountaineer & speaker, ‘It’s not about flawless ex*****on but about being resilient and intentional. Consistency compounds and actions add up when motivation fades’.

Bone health is a term commonly used to describe the strength and density of bones. Persons with a physical disability are at risk of poor bone health and their bones can be described as being osteoporotic and having low bone mineral density.

Key strategies to improve bone health include a balanced diet containing calcium rich foods, regular exercises like walking and weight straining to strengthen bones and life style modifications avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol.

To find out how you can improve your bone health, book a physiotherapy and nutritional therapy appointment at Oxford Street Therapy Centre by emailing info@oxford-street-therapy-centre.co.uk , or ringing us on 01933 224 454 or 07533167939.

The Key points
A great deal of the physical effects that we once thought was caused by ageing are actually the result of inactivity – Dr Hirofumi Tanaka, an expert on ageing athletes.

Nordic walking, Weight training, Pilates, Cheerleading and dance, walking football, Qigong and Tai Chi, Yoga and Regenerative walking are some of the recommended activities in this book to keep fit.

There is substantial agreement that a Mediterranean diet of fruit, vegetables, beans, whole grains, fish low in saturated fat and only small amount of dairy and meat leads to a reduction in obesity, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, several cancers, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and risk of premature death.

So ‘Keep Moving Onwards and Upwards’. If you need more advice on exercise and diet you know where we are.
