We understand that living with lymphoedema - or any long-term health condition - can sometimes feel overwhelming. In those moments, hearing from someone who truly understands can make all the difference. Personal stories have the power to comfort, uplift and remind us that we are not alone in our challenges.

Today, we’re sharing the deeply personal and encouraging patient journey of Louise, who has lived with lymphoedema for over 16 years. Her experience began unexpectedly after IVF treatment, when her left leg began to swell. With no clear answers and being told that she “just had a big leg,” Louise was left confused and searching for support and understanding.

Today is (yes, really!) 🚽🧻

It's all about raising awareness that access to a safe, clean toilet is more than a convenience - it’s a basic human right. Around the world millions of people still lack access to proper sanitation. At home in the UK, the issue is more that it's getting harder and harder to find a public loo when you really need one! 🚽

The British Toilet Association estimates nearly 60% of public toilets across the UK have closed in the last decade, primarily due to local government budget cuts. The loss of public toilets in communities is a huge problem affecting so many people in the UK - particularly those with disabilities, the elderly or those living with medical conditions.

We know that for many of our patients living with an ostomy, managing hydration, diet and having emergency loo access is a part of everyday planning. When public toilet options vanish or become inaccessible, you’re left with fewer safe places to go. That can mean reducing how often and how far you’ll go out, limiting what you drink or just being anxious about being caught short. It’s not just inconvenient - it affects dignity, independence and inclusion.

What can you do?
🚽 Carry a RADAR key and/or a 'Just Can't Wait' card if you need accessible facilities - or encourage someone who supports you to carry one.
🚽 Download and use apps like the Great British Public Toilet Map to plan ahead.
🚽 Support local campaigns or speak to your local council about public toilet provision in your area.
🚽 If you work in a hospitality or retail setting, consider joining a community toilet scheme.
🚽Share this post! Raise awareness that sanitation is not a niche issue - it’s one of health, mobility, equality and inclusion.
