Do you want to know the secret to whiter teeth?! We are here to tell it all! 😀

At Woodlands Dental Surgery we recommend teeth whitening AFTER you’ve had your teeth cleaned. Why❓ Great question!

One of the main culprits behind stained or discoloured teeth is plaque and tartar build-up around the gums. During your cleaning, our hygienist will break up all of the build-ups to reveal cleaner, whiter teeth! 🆗

Before whitening, we also must ensure that your teeth are healthy enough for treatment and do not present issues
such as:

🦷Cavities
🦷Oral cancer
🦷Gum disease
🦷Tooth sensitivity

These issues will cause uncomfortable sensitivity and future issues with your oral health so we must address them prior.

Just remember–white teeth do not mean healthy teeth!
Schedule your cleaning today and discuss your whitening options if you are ready for a more confident smile. 👇

Composite is a 'Girl's Best-friend'😍

Composite bonding is the non-prep alternative to porcelain veneers. They provide a cosmetic smile makeover without any changes or damage to the natural teeth and this treatment is really popular amongst our younger patients.👌

If you are unhappy with your smile and considering a change but don't want the commitment of permanent veneers, this is the perfect treatment 🥰

At your consultation, our dentists will discuss your
options 😀

Should you mouthwash after brushing❓

Using a mouthwash that contains fluoride can help prevent tooth decay, 👀 but don't use mouthwash (even a fluoride one) straight after brushing your teeth 🦷 or it'll wash away the concentrated fluoride in the toothpaste left on your tooth.👌

Be Aware 👀

The government have recently promoted va**ng as an alternative to smoking.

While dentists accept the harm caused by va**ng may be less than smoking. There have been recent suggestions linking disposable vapes to gum disease. Epidemiological studies also highlight concerns over oral dryness, irritation, and gum diseases. 😬

Mick Armstrong, Chair of the British Dental Association’s Health and Science Committee said: “The risks of long-term oral and general health problems from e-cigarettes are frankly an unknown. With products that are so new, officials must keep an eye on emerging evidence, particularly given high uptake among young people.”✔️

What is Composite Bonding❓

This is a question we get asked a lot!😀

Composite bonding is one of the most popular treatments in the world of dentistry right now✔️

Using composite bonding allows patients to completely change their smile without the need for any drilling, injections or pain.

We place a small and thin amount of composite onto the front surface of the natural tooth then mould and shape the composite to the desired look for the patient.

It's a completely reversible treatment, which allows you to remove the composite at any point without doing any damage to your teeth.

Who else drinks way too much coffee?🙋🏻 Even though coffee is a great pick-me-up, it can stain our teeth which can become more difficult to remove over time.

Tannin is the natural ingredient found in coffee, tea, wine, and chocolate and contributes to the colour and flavour. It is a plant-based compound that enables stains to stick to your teeth, leaving behind an unwanted yellow tint👎🏻

But not to worry, we've got you covered! Here are some tips we recommend for removing coffee stains from your teeth:

😀Switch from a manual toothbrush to an electric one.

💧Brush your teeth half an hour after drinking coffee, and rinse your mouth with water before brushing.

☕Avoid sugar and creamer in your coffee; they speed up the growth of discolouration.

🥤If iced coffee is your favourite, drink it through a straw to reduce the chances of staining your teeth.

😊To prevent bacteria build-up, have your coffee in one sitting rather than having it throughout the day.

✨Drink a glass of water to rinse your mouth and teeth after finishing your cup of coffee.

🍓Have raw fruits and vegetables, like lemons and strawberries, that contain natural fibres to help break down bacteria and clean your teeth.

🍵Most importantly, drink fewer cups of coffee and replace it with green tea as much as possible.

🤍Visit your dentist twice a year for a dental cleaning and get teeth whitening done under expert care.

🧊 WE HEAR A LOT that it’s bad to chew ice. It’s because ice can do a lot of damage to our teeth and gums.🧊

Tooth enamel might be the strongest substance in the body, but it’s also brittle. The issue with ice isn’t just that it’s hard, it’s also that it’s cold. 😬 Extreme temperature changes cause tooth enamel to expand and contract, creating tiny cracks and weakening the overall structure. It’s the same thing that happens to the pavement in places that get snow.

While weaker enamel can lead to tooth sensitivity and vulnerability to decay, ice also isn’t good for gum tissue. It’s so cold that it creates a numbing effect, which can make it difficult to notice if it causes an injury to the gums. It’s also hard enough to break or chip teeth, and it could easily pop a braces bracket loose.

Why crave ice if there are only downsides to chewing it? 🤔 The scientific term for compulsive ice eating is pagophagia. It could indicate an eating disorder called pica (the compulsion to eat non-food items) or it could be related to iron deficiency anaemia. The chill of ice stimulates blood flow, counteracting low oxygen levels in the brain, but that only treats a symptom of anaemia, not the cause.
