As we wrap up Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Month this February 2026, here is a summary of the key messages and actions to protect your central vision.
👁️ Summary: Protecting Your Center of Sight
- The Leading Cause: AMD is the leading cause of vision loss for those over 50. It specifically targets the macula, affecting the sharp, central vision you need for reading, driving, and recognising faces.
- Two Types to Know: Most people have Dry AMD, which progresses slowly. Wet AMD is less common but more severe, often causing rapid vision loss if not treated immediately.
- The "Wavy Line" Warning: A key red flag for AMD is when straight lines (like door frames or text) appear wavy or distorted. If you notice this, seek medical attention right away.
- Lifestyle as Armor: You can lower your risk by quitting smoking—smokers are up to four times more likely to develop AMD. Maintaining a diet rich in leafy greens and omega-3s also supports macular health.
🚀 Take Action Today
- Schedule a Comprehensive Exam: An OCT scan can detect early signs of AMD before symptoms appear.
- Monitor Your Vision: Use an Amsler Grid weekly to check for new distortions or blind spots in either eye.
- Support Your Eyes: If you are over 50, wear 100% UV-blocking sunglasses even on overcast days to protect your retina from cumulative sun damage.
- Spread the Word: Share this post to help your loved ones recognise the early warning signs of central vision loss.
Looking ahead, we continue our commitment to eye health by moving into Workplace Eye Wellness Month this March.
