Mind the Gap! 📏👀

Proper ergonomics isn't just about your chair; it’s about your screen distance too. To celebrate Workplace Eye Wellness Month, try the 1-2-10 Rule for your devices:

• 1 foot (30cm): The ideal distance for mobile phones.
• 2 feet (60cm): The sweet spot for desktop monitors.
• 10 feet (3m): The minimum for larger TV or presentation screens.

Positioning your monitor slightly below eye level can also reduce strain on your neck and eyes.

Did you know - 90% of workplace eye injuries are preventable with the right gear. 🛡️👷‍♀️

In the UK, your safety eyewear should meet the BS EN 166 standard for impact resistance.

Whether it's chemical splashes or flying debris, standard "fashion" glasses won't cut it. Your employer must provide suitable PPE free of charge based on their risk assessment.

Stay safe, stay compliant.

Quick check: Have you had your employer-funded eye test? 👓✅

Under UK DSE Regulations, if you use a computer screen for a significant part of your job, your employer must provide and pay for an eye test if you request one.

They also have a duty to pay for basic glasses if the test shows you specifically need them for your screen work. Don't wait for your vision to change—book your check-up today to stay sharp!

March is Workplace Wellness Month. Does your workday feel like a blur? 🖥️

If you spend your day staring at a laptop or monitor, you’re at risk of digital eye strain.

We use the 20/20/20 rule :

Every 20 MINUTES, look at something 20 FEET away for at least 20 SECONDS.

This small habit allows your eye muscles to relax and helps prevent the headaches and dry eyes that common "Display Screen Equipment" (DSE) users face.

As we wrap up Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Month this February 2026, here is a summary of the key messages and actions to protect your central vision.

👁️ Summary: Protecting Your Center of Sight
- The Leading Cause: AMD is the leading cause of vision loss for those over 50. It specifically targets the macula, affecting the sharp, central vision you need for reading, driving, and recognising faces.
- Two Types to Know: Most people have Dry AMD, which progresses slowly. Wet AMD is less common but more severe, often causing rapid vision loss if not treated immediately.
- The "Wavy Line" Warning: A key red flag for AMD is when straight lines (like door frames or text) appear wavy or distorted. If you notice this, seek medical attention right away.
- Lifestyle as Armor: You can lower your risk by quitting smoking—smokers are up to four times more likely to develop AMD. Maintaining a diet rich in leafy greens and omega-3s also supports macular health.

🚀 Take Action Today
- Schedule a Comprehensive Exam: An OCT scan can detect early signs of AMD before symptoms appear.
- Monitor Your Vision: Use an Amsler Grid weekly to check for new distortions or blind spots in either eye.
- Support Your Eyes: If you are over 50, wear 100% UV-blocking sunglasses even on overcast days to protect your retina from cumulative sun damage.
- Spread the Word: Share this post to help your loved ones recognise the early warning signs of central vision loss.

Looking ahead, we continue our commitment to eye health by moving into Workplace Eye Wellness Month this March.

Living with AMD can feel isolating, but you don't have to navigate it alone. 🤝

Vision loss often impacts daily tasks like driving or reading, which can lead to social withdrawal—but support is available.

Whether you are newly diagnosed or managing advanced AMD, connecting with others makes a difference:

• Join a Group: Organisations like the Macular Society provide local support groups: www.macularsociety.org/support/support-group/local-groups/
• Ask for Help: Don't be afraid to use Low-Vision aids which is something we provide; contact us to find out more:

Low Vision Service Wales is a scheme to enable Optometrists to determine a person's residual vision and then to improve this with various Optical and non-Optical devices.

These devices are provided at no cost to the patient and can make a huge difference to the quality of life of our senior patients. We will also provide information about additional services available within the local area to support you.

We can now Certify people as sight impaired, allowing access to the extensive range of help and benefits which this provides.

We provide a Service for urgent Eye Problems, funded by the NHS!

This is for patients who have eye problems of an acute nature. It can also be used to accept referrals from another healthcare provider. It enables patients to be seen in their community, and reduces the strain placed on the Hospital eye services.

Furthermore, following significant advanced training, we are now able to offer appointments under the WGOS 5 system, which allows a wide range of medication to be prescribed for the eye.

Following legislative changes in 2023, Wales General Ophthalmic Services (WGOS) replaced General Ophthalmic Services (Wales) (GOS[W]), Eye Health Examination Wales (EHEW), Low Vision Services Wales (LVSW), and many various local enhanced service pathways.

Protecting your vision starts with your daily habits! 🥗🏃‍♂️

While you can’t change your age or family history, you can lower your risk of progressing to advanced AMD.

Here is how to keep your eyes healthy in 2025:

1. Eat Your Greens: Leafy greens (kale, spinach), eggs, and orange/yellow veggies contain pigments that protect the macula.
2. Quit Smoking: Regular smokers are twice as likely to develop AMD.
3. Shield Your Eyes: Wear UV-protective sunglasses whenever you’re outdoors.
4. Know Your Numbers: Managing blood pressure and cholesterol levels helps maintain healthy blood flow to your eyes.

Small changes today can save your sight tomorrow. Share this with someone you love! ❤️

Did you know that there are two types of macular degeneration:

1. The Dry Type - This is the most common form. In this type of macula degeneration, the delicate tissues of the macula become thinned and slowly lose function.

2. The Wet Type - This is less common, but is typically more damaging. The wet type of macula degeneration is caused by the growth of abnormal blood vessels behind the macula. The abnormal blood vessels tend to haemorrhage or leak, resulting in the formation of scar tissue. In some instances, the dry stage of macula degeneration can turn into the wet stage.
