⚠️ Choking Awareness post from First Start First Aid ⚠️

It’s that time of year again — snuggly season!
🍁Perfect for toasting marshmallows over the fire or curling up with a hot chocolate piled high with gooey mini marshmallows... but did you know? 👇

🍬 Marshmallows can be a hazardous treat for young children! 🍬

Why?
⛔️ They’re so light and airy that if a child laughs, runs, or talks with one in their mouth, it can easily be sucked into the airway.
⛔️ Once wet, they expand and turn sticky — if they become lodged in the airway, they can be very difficult to remove.

👉 Ideally, it’s best to avoid giving marshmallows until your child is much older.

Button batteries can badly hurt or kill a small child if they swallow one.

They are small, round, silver-coloured batteries that come in many different sizes and types.

Here are some top tips from the Office for Product Safety and Standards to keep children safe from button batteries:

1️⃣ Look around your home for button batteries. Think toys, lights, remote controls and more

2️⃣ Check for products with loose backs and button batteries that have dropped out

3️⃣ Store button batteries in a safe place, up high an out of your child's reach

4️⃣ Dispose of used button batteries as soon as you can. They are still unsafe

5️⃣ Act if you think your child may have swallowed a button battery, go straight to the Emergency Department or call an ambulance
