It's National Stress Awareness Day.

National Stress Awareness Day was established in 1998 by the International Stress Management Association (ISMA) to help provide information on stress, and strategies on how to address it for both companies and individuals.

Everyone has stress. Some stress is good for us. It helps us to respond to changes in life. Stress is our body's way of protecting itself from harm. However, too much stress causes harm to our health and relationships.

Identifying the stressors impacting our physical and mental health is important. Sometimes, health problems are the cause. But our health can also be affected by external stressors such as physical abuse, stressful work environments, financial stress, or other family health issues.

Once we identify the causes of stress in our lives, we can begin to eliminate or reduce stress.
Some things that can help with stress include:

🔸Regular exercise
🔸Healthy habits
🔸Adequate sleep
🔸Self care
🔸Time management
🔸Regular check-ups
🔸Relaxation techniques
🔸Social connections

With Halloween right around the corner we thought it would be good to put out a friendly message to remind people that knocking on the doors of elderly or vulnerable individuals when trick or treating can negatively affect them through increased anxiety, physical risks, and confusion, particularly for those living with dementia or mobility issues. A disruption in routine, combined with unfamiliar visitors and loud noises, can be overwhelming.

Mental and emotional impacts

Anxiety and intimidation: For those who live alone, a constant stream of strangers—especially teenagers in intimidating costumes—repeatedly knocking on the door can cause significant stress and anxiety.

Confusion for people with dementia: The sudden changes associated with Halloween can be particularly distressing for people with dementia or Alzheimer's. Scary masks, loud noises, and decorations disrupt their normal routine and can trigger agitation and fear, as they may have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is a costume.

Sensory overload: Bright costumes, flashing lights, loud noises, and repeated doorbell rings can be disorienting and cause distress for people with sensory sensitivities.

Physical safety and mobility issues

Increased fall risk: For those with limited mobility, having to get up repeatedly to answer the door can increase the risk of a fall.

Vandalism concerns: Some vulnerable people may worry about being targeted by older youths engaging in pranks or vandalism if they choose not to participate.

How communities can help

Neighbours, families, and trick-or-treaters can take steps to ensure a safer and more comfortable Halloween for vulnerable residents:

Watch for clear signals: Teach children to skip homes that do not have decorations or have their porch lights turned off. This is a common indicator that residents are not participating.

Provide companionship: Spend the evening with an elderly or vulnerable loved one. You can help hand out candy on their behalf or offer a calming distraction with movies or conversation.

Use signs: Some organisations offer printable "No Trick-or-Treaters" signs that can be posted by the front door.

Be considerate: Trick-or-treaters can be mindful by knocking once, being quiet, and skipping houses where they know a vulnerable person lives.

Do you just need someone to talk to? To chat about the weather or what’s been on TV? Would it help if you had someone to go to the shops with, or a friendly face who help you get to the community centre?

A recent statistic from a study conducted by Age UK revealed that almost a million older people in the UK go for more than a month without speaking to anyone at all. At Respectful Care, we find that many clients don't necessarily need a lot of physical help, but would better benefit from having a companion to chat to, whether at home or out and about.

If you or your family member could benefit from companionship support whether that be for social reasons or work commitments, rest assured our trained, compassionate staff can add this vital human element to your day. Our tailored support will become a trusted, friendly face who will share your interests and offer genuine companionship.
