Vaisakhi and Rama Navami Festivals

Vaisakhi is one of the most important dates in the Sikh calendar. It is the Sikh New Year festival and is celebrated on 13 or 14 April, it also commemorates the year that Sikishm was established back in 1699.

Rama Navami is a Hindu festival that commemorates the birth of Rama, as known as the seventh avatar of Vishnu and one of the revered deities in Hinduism. Rama is sought to be the symbol of righteousness, good conduct and virtue among Hindus.

A Vaisakhi and Rama Navami celebration will be taking place at City Hospital Chapel on Monday 22 April, and at Sandwell Chapel on Wednesday 24 April from 12pm – 2pm.

Colleagues are invited to meet our Hindu and Sikh Chaplains who will lead with short prayers. Refreshments will be available afterwards.

For further information about the event, from the Chaplaincy team please call ext. 3552/4055

“Speak the Truth in Love!”

On Valentine’s Day (2-4pm),
Chaplaincy Team and some volunteers will be visiting some of our elderly wards at Sandwell Hospital as they serenade our patients, families and staff with love songs. The activity aims to enlighten the mood of our patients and to heal the wounded soul by using the therapeutic power of music and reflective conversations.

Love and Ashes: Speak the truth in love – join us in celebrating Ash Wednesday

On Wednesday 14 February, Ash Wednesday will be celebrated as this marks the beginning of Lent which is a 40-day season (not counting Sundays). It is marked by repentance, fasting, reflection, and ultimately celebration.

The chaplaincy team would like to offer the opportunity for colleagues to be able to observe this tradition. The team will be offering the blessing of ashes (a sign of the cross on your forehead) as well as a simple one-line prayer before administering the ash.

Please see times and locations below:

Sandwell Chapel, 12.30pm – 1.30pm (will visit Sandwell wards between 1.30pm – 2.30pm)
City Chapel, 12.30pm – 1.30pm (will visit City wards between 1.30pm – 2.30pm)
Rowley Regis, 12.30pm – 1pm (will visit Rowley wards between 11.30am – 12.30pm)
Leasowes, 1.30pm – 2.30pm

On the same day (Valentine’s Day), the chaplaincy team will also be hosting a stand at Sandwell main reception between 10am – 12pm to increase awareness with its spiritual care services. This is themed as “Speak the Truth in Love” in partnership with Freedom to Speak Up”.

For more information please call ext. 3552 or email eddie.briones@nhs.net.
