Hat trick

Working in healthcare means that we have to wear many hats. Here a just a few of mine…

Clinician: Assessing and monitoring hearing health
Detective: Looking out for subtle changes in your condition and identifying issues before they escalate
Therapist: Providing emotional support, and listening to patient concerns
Coach: Giving guidance to help achieve your hearing goals

Tech support: Managing hearing aid technology and exploring AI solutions that work best for you. (Thanks AI for creating my hats) 😊

These are the reasons I love my work so much, with all the variety it offers, meaning every day is different.

Which hats do you wear every day?

Come and have a chat about your hearing health and choose a hat that works for you!

Cut through the noise

When hearing loss is present, the brain has to work much harder to “fill in the gaps” – which can lead to listening fatigue and frustration.

Our advanced hearing assessments go beyond the standard test. We can check how well you understand speech in background noise and pinpoint where listening takes more effort. Depending upon the level of hearing loss, we can look at various options which may include hearing aids.

Modern hearing aids are totally discreet, providing a 360° sound environment and Bluetooth® connectivity from hands-free calls and geo-tagging to real-time language translation – great for overseas travel!

This Valentine’s Day, stay connected to the people you love ❤️

When someone we love experiences hearing loss, it can have a ripple effect on relationships and how they engage with the world. If you’re not sure how to approach the conversation, below are a few tips to get you started.

🔷Be mindful - hearing loss can be an emotional conversation, so be aware of emotions: both yours and theirs.
🔷Be supportive - offer your time by going along with them to a hearing check
🔷Be encouraging - remind them that they have nothing to lose and everything to gain by looking after their hearing health.

Support is the most important part of helping someone navigate the challenges of hearing loss. Even if they’re not ready to make an appointment right away, your encouragement and understanding can make all the difference.

If you would like to take that first step, get in touch with us at .

🎧 Hopeful news for people living with tinnitus

A pioneering study led by Newcastle University has unveiled a new sound therapy that can reduce the loudness of tinnitus - and it could one day be delivered online using everyday devices like smartphones and headphones.

The therapy works by subtly disrupting unhelpful activity patterns in the brain’s sound-processing area helping make tinnitus quieter. The study has shown positive early results which is really promising for the future. 💙

👂 Tinnitus Awareness Week | 2–9 February 2026 - Therapies that can help manage tinnitus

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to tinnitus, but a range of therapies can help reduce its impact and make symptoms easier to live with:

✔️ Sound pillow – A sound pillow is a speaker you can insert or put under a pillow. They can be helpful if you would like to listen to sounds to help you sleep and connect easily to your smartphone or similar device.
✔️ Hearing aids – for people with hearing loss, these can reduce the contrast between tinnitus and everyday sounds.
✔️ Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – helps change how you respond to tinnitus and reduce distress.
✔️ Mindfulness & relaxation – techniques such as deep breathing, yoga or meditation can lower stress, which can often makes tinnitus worse.
✔️ Lifestyle support – protecting your ears from loud noises and building calming daily routines

Everyone experiences tinnitus differently, and the right approach will depend on your individual symptoms. At Hearing Matters Ltd we can help guide you towards the most suitable options. Get in touch with us today.

👂 Tinnitus Awareness Week | 2–9 February 2026

Tinnitus affects over seven million adults in the UK. For some it’s a gentle hiss or whistle, while for others it can sound as loud as traffic or machinery.

Tinnitus can feel overwhelming, but there are ways to manage it. Options may include sound therapy, hearing aids (where hearing loss is present), relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioural therapy.

New research is also showing promise, with sound therapies using everyday devices like smartphones and headphones offering hope for reducing the perceived loudness of tinnitus.

If tinnitus is affecting you, there are a number of different options which may be able to help. Get in touch with the team at as you’re not on your own.

A driving force for good

Always such a pleasure to support John Nicholson at Community Driving School CIC (CDS) and as always these events are pretty special. And a big thank you to the guests who came up to the stage to let me examine their ears!

John has a knack of finding people who need his help but he can’t do it on his own, so the point is he needs all the help he can get - whether that’s emotional, financial, practical support or a cheerleader – whatever your role it could make all the difference to someone.

Under his guidance, CDS has grown into a vital community resource that drives change and helps to change lives. If you want to learn more or support their work visit thecds.org.uk Community Driving School.
