You wouldn’t believe what we find… 👂

We see a lot of ears at Hearing Matters… and every now and then, something unexpected turns up.

Let’s just say… it’s not always wax.

Over the next few posts, we’re sharing some of the strangest things we’ve carefully removed from patients’ ears.

All real. All handled calmly. All a reminder of just how important it is to have someone you trust when something doesn’t feel quite right.

Let’s start with one of the more… memorable ones.

🕷️ A spider!

(Not alive by the time we’d finished.)

Carefully and cautiously removed — but not something you forget in a hurry.

Any ideas what else we've found in patients' ears?

A lot of people take care of their sight with regular trips to the optician.

But far fewer treat their hearing the same way — and that’s a real shame.

Hearing loss can have a significant impact on someone’s day-to-day life.

And early diagnosis and care can help avoid further, unnecessary complications.

We recommend a hearing test at least once a year.

Sometimes more frequently, depending on the type of hearing loss.

Why?

Because changes often happen gradually — and people don’t notice them.

But we do at Hearing Matters Ltd.

Thank you John Kelly, for lending me your ears. It was a pleasure to have you in clinic today.

Looking for a quick way to find out how good your hearing is?

Why not try out our easy hearing screen test at home. The tool is a good way to determine whether there is a possible hearing loss, helping with early detection.

Please be aware that that this test is not designed to replace a professional hearing test and further evaluation is advised in clinic if a potential issue is highlighted.

Try it out and let me know what you think. Link in comments.

When is the right time to get a hearing aid?

This is one of the most popular questions I get asked. And I always say that it depends on the needs of the individual and your lifestyle.

It's also worth letting go of any pre-conceived ideas around hearing aids. They're definitely not a sign of getting older - they're simply a way of staying connected to the world around you. And today's hearing aids are smaller, more discreet, and more effective than most people expect.

If you want to carry on the conversation get in touch and I can help you take your next step towards better hearing.

What type of hearing aid?

Finding the best hearing aids can naturally feel overwhelming, and with dozens of manufacturers claiming to have the "best" technology where do you begin?

A lot of your decision making is around your lifestyle – whether you’re looking for all day comfort, clarity in a social setting or budget friendly options here are just a couple of points to think about.

You might be paying for advanced sensor technology that you simply don't need. If your days are relatively predictable, such as being mostly at home, with the occasional outing, you'd be paying premium prices for features you won't fully use.

If budget is a priority or your hearing loss is milder, you might want to look at other hearing aid brands or consider Zircon, Oticon's essential line.

Rechargeable or battery models? Again if you prefer ease of use batteries may be the simpler option.

If you want to discuss the best options to suit your individual lifestyle, get in touch and I can help you take your next step towards better hearing.

Have your say on public transport accessibility

In the first ever survey focusing on public transport accessibility for people who are deaf or have hearing loss in the UK, the Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID) is urging hard of hearing and deaf people to share their experiences.

The survey is part of a major project, funded by the Motability Foundation, which aims to understand the barriers faced by people who are deaf or have hearing loss when using public transport.

Findings from the project will be used to develop a detailed report and recommendations for transport providers, policymakers and technology companies, as well as informing our future work with these organisations.

Be quick you have until 13 April to have your say. Access the survey here: https://emea.focusvision.com/survey/selfserve/4545/260205?list=8 #?

Planning a trip away this Easter?

If you’re travelling with hearing aids, here are a few quick packing tips to make sure you’ve got everything covered.

▪️ Spare batteries and charger: Never leave home without backups!
▪️ Cleaning kit: Keeping your hearing aids clean on the go helps them work at their best.
▪️ Dehumidifier: If you’re travelling to humid places, a small portable dehumidifier is handy for keeping moisture away.
▪️ Storage case: A sturdy case will keep your hearing aids safe when you’re not using them.
▪️ Extra parts: If your hearing aids have parts that wear out easily, like wax guards or tubes, bring spares.

Travelling with hearing aids doesn't have to be complicated. Keep the essentials packed, use the available tech, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Safe travels!

A patient brought in a gorgeous bunch of flowers just recently, to say thank you for helping them with their hearing aids. Such a thoughtful and kind gesture.

But most of all… there is nothing more rewarding than seeing someone regain their confidence through better hearing, enabling them to lead more independent lives through the power of connection.

If you are looking for advice about your hearing or maybe you want to know how hearing aids can help you stay part of the conversation – get in touch – we’d love to hear from you.

Did you know hearing loss can affect your balance? 👂

The inner ear controls both hearing and stability, helping the brain understand movement and orientation. When hearing declines, spatial awareness and coordination can also be affected.

In fact, even mild hearing loss can triple the risk of falls in older adults. If you’re feeling unsteady on your feet or experiencing dizziness or vertigo, it may be worth checking your hearing.

We’re always happy to offer friendly advice and help you take the first step towards better hearing health.

Your hearing – your choice. 👂

Working independently, I’ve got the advantage of not being tied to one specific brand or supplier.

That means when I sit down with you to talk about their hearing health, I can take the time to understand your lifestyle and your budget. Once we’ve chatted this through, I can recommend the hearing technology that genuinely suits you best.

Instead of a one-size-fits-all approach, I can provide tailored advice and show you a wide range of hearing technology so that together we can find the solution that works best for you and your pocket.

Celebrating neurodiversity

Neurodiversity Week this month is a reminder that the way we experience the world is not the same for everyone.

Gradual hearing loss can quietly disconnect people from conversations and the social world around them, leading to isolation and withdrawal. In a different way, autism and ADHD can also create barriers to social connection.

The good news is that support and technology are improving all the time. If you or someone you know is following conversations is becoming harder a simple hearing check could make all the difference.
