Pregnant women should continue to be prescribed with adrenaline auto-injector pens and have adrenaline administered as normal in the event of an allergic emergency.

Management for anaphylaxis in pregnant women follows a similar approach to non-pregnant women. However, one important difference is that, in the event of anaphylaxis or suspected anaphylaxis, the mother should lie on her left side following administration of her AAI (adrenaline auto-injector such as EpiPen). This is to help improve her blood circulation to the heart, until emergency medical assistance arrives.

Celia Marsh tragically died from anaphylaxis, after eating a Pret vegan wrap that was supposed to be dairy-free but was later found to contain traces of milk protein.

A few months ago at her inquest, we heard that the owner of the 'dairy-free' yogurt company (used in the vegan wrap by Pret) admitted they didn't carry out testing on the raw ingredient to make the yogurt. This ingredient was delivered to them with 'may-contain' a number of top 14 allergens that included milk. They chose instead to rely on verbal "assurances" that it was dairy-free.

At the inquest it was painful to witness this wonderful family have to relive every moment of their mother's/sister's/wife's death and to listen to all the findings that the inquest unearthed. Just as in Natasha's PFD, strong recommendations have been made. Celia Marsh should still be alive today.

The Prevention of Future Deaths (PFD) report has now been published and the senior coroner Maria Voisin said lessons must be learnt to prevent future allergy deaths. She has made a number of recommendations including the introduction of mandatory reporting of near fatal and fatal anaphylactic reactions in hospitals - similar to a current system which is used for notifiable diseases only (anaphylaxis is not one of them). This would make sure that incidents of anaphylaxis are dealt with promptly to avoid other families losing loved ones.

Celia Marsh's family would like all near fatal and fatal anaphylactic reactions to be reported as a 'notifiable disease'. This would give people with food allergies vital early warnings of food products that are being sold that contain undeclared allergens.

The coroner also said products labelled as “free-from” should mean just that and be completely free-from that allergen. There is currently no "robust system" in place when making such claims.

The latest data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) shows that scarlet fever cases continue to remain higher than we would typically see at this time of year.
