Being neurodivergent is NOT a disadvantage. It's a superpower. My "divergent" brain IS the reason I've been successful in my life. It's no surprise that entrepreneurs & creatives commonly have ADHD. A 2019 study published in the Journal of Attention Disorders found that entrepreneurs were up to 625%...

Great to be reading research which shows strengths scientifically linked with autism and ADHD.

Study 1:

Summary:
A well-established psychological theory states that most of us are less likely to intervene in a bad situation if other people are present, and this 'bystander effect' also applies to workplace settings. However, new research shows that people with autism are less likely to be affected by this social contagion than neurotypical people. They are less likely to stay silent in the face of gross misconduct or even just everyday mistakes, pointing to the positive aspects of autism and how organizations can benefit from hiring more neurodivergent people, findings reveal.

Women in their 40s currently make up the biggest proportion of people receiving an autism diagnosis, but what is it that's contributing to later recognition?

One reason is that many autistic females can show subtler or less 'classic' developmental features. Here are a few examples:

- Meeting early language milestones when typically expected; though some are described as having advanced vocabulary and being described as 'sounding older than their years.'

- Engaging in 'play' with dolls and animals; instead we commonly hear that play involves a high level of detail, may be a repetition of what was seen at school or on the television, that lots of time is invested in setting up the play and it's story.

- Not having difficulties within friendship until teenage years or beyond; many females describe copying peers, practising conversations, mimicking others' facial expressions/ gestures and studying neurotypical expectations. As social demands increase it becomes increasingly difficult to 'hide' leading to friendship difficulties appearing later.

- Other diagnoses overshadow, such as anxiety and depression and for some eating disorders.

- Differences are put down to 'being shy' or they go 'under the radar.'

At Fraser Clinical Psychology, we go beyond asking the standard questions of the ADIR (a diagnostic tool commonly used in developmental history sessions in autism assessments) to ensure the full picture is gathered. We also ensure self report and lived experience is collected and prioritised.
