The Veterans Hub Weymouth & Portland CIC Bringing veterans and their families together within the local community. "Helping others is the way we help ourselves"
(2)

"At the Veterans Hub our mission is to provide a bespoke and immediate service for veterans, their families, and those still serving, within the local community when they need it the most." The founder of this project made the decision to form the Hub after being diagnosed with CPTSD in early 2017 following more than a decade of deployments; as a British Soldier and Private Contractor, to various countries in the Middle East & Northern Africa. Following several years of self-medication and minimal support from anyone else, he was encouraged by loved ones to seek out professional support after suffering a breakdown in his mental health. Even though he was lucky enough to find help through a local service, it was clear that due to the unprecedented number of veterans in the UK suffering from mental health and physical traumas, the mainstream charities were very quickly becoming overwhelmed and that those in crisis could often find themselves having unreasonably long waits to receive much needed assistance, and in the worst-case scenarios, even forgotten about. In addition to this, local health services were woefully underfunded and ill-equipped to deal with the unique problems that veterans and their families can be faced with. It was through these realizations that the idea of The Veterans Hub was formed and by 2018, a full-time project was opened in Weymouth, Dorset. By maintaining the core values of the British Armed Forces, the team at the Hub has created a unique place for veterans, and their families to go to in times of crisis, or just to be around other veterans, in a relaxed and supportive environment. Onsite there is a purpose-built gym, allotment area, private garden, second hand shop, community café, and multi-agency welfare office. All the above is free to access for veterans, their families, those still serving, and is accessible 6 days per week. Lastly, The Veterans Hub, above all things, brings together veterans within the local community in order that none of them are ever left behind or forgotten about, and it really is a place where people find friends they never knew they had.

Everyone is welcome.

We were deeply honoured and humbled to welcome Steve James, Head of Dorset Freemasonry, to the The Veterans Hub Community Cafe this morning for the presentation of a beautiful commemorative shield.

The shield celebrates our shared commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant and the ongoing support we provide to veterans and their families across the region. Dorset Freemasons, who hold Gold Status under the Covenant, have been incredible supporters of the Hub over the years — through fundraising, volunteering, and community engagement.

We were joined by the Mayor of Weymouth, Cllr Caroline Nickinson, the Armed Forces Liaison for Weymouth Town Council, Cllr Joanna Dickenson and several Freemason veterans, making the event even more special.

Adding to their generosity, members of Manor Lodge, Portland, also presented the Hub with a £200 donation, helping us continue our work supporting the Armed Forces community.

The commemorative shield will take pride of place at the Hub — a lasting symbol of shared values, service, and support, and a wonderful reminder of the strong partnership between Dorset Freemasons and the Veterans Hub.

From all of us here — thank you for your continued kindness and solidarity.

This week, we’ve had the absolute honour of helping with the installation of the Falklands Tribute by Standing with Giants at Nothe Fort.

We were humbled to be asked by the Fort to lend a hand, and since Monday our team has been on site helping to bring this incredible exhibition to life. Today, we had the privilege of attending the private launch, and we can honestly say—it’s something truly special.

The Falklands Tribute is a powerful and moving installation featuring 258 silhouettes, created to honour the 255 British service personnel and 3 civilians who gave their lives during the Falklands conflict in 1982. It also stands as a tribute to all who served and to the lasting impact the war had on veterans, families, and communities. It’s a striking reminder of sacrifice, service, and remembrance.

The exhibition is now open to the public, and we can’t recommend it enough. If you’re able to, please go along and experience this powerful and moving tribute for yourself.

A huge thank you to Standing with Giants and Nothe Fort for including us in this meaningful project.
