Injury rehab isn’t just for sporty people — it matters just as much if you’re dealing with everyday aches and pains from work, stress, or daily life.

One of the most common things I hear is, “I do a few exercises when I remember” or “I just do the ones I like.” Unfortunately, doing the odd one or two, or a little bit here and there, is usually not enough to create real change.

Rehab exercises are given in a specific order and for a specific reason:
✔️ Calm irritation
✔️ Restore normal movement
✔️ Build support and stability
✔️ Prevent the problem coming back

People often say they don’t have enough time because life is busy — and that’s completely understandable. But when you’re injured, making time to get better is essential. A few consistent minutes each day now can prevent weeks or months of ongoing pain later.

Treatment on its own isn’t enough. Hands-on therapy helps, but real recovery happens when you carry out your rehab exercises and follow them progressively. Each stage prepares your body for the next, helping you return to normal life stronger and more resilient.

You don’t need to be an athlete — you just need consistency. A small amount done regularly will always beat occasional effort.

Your body adapts to what you do repeatedly… so make rehab part of your routine, not something you only do when the pain reminds you.

“I don’t know where to turn, I’m so confused”

A patient said this to me 5 weeks before their hip replacement. They were googling late at night, terrified of the pain, worried about getting back to work, and scared they’d never trust this ‘piece of metal in their body’
If you’re in that 4-6 week window before surgery and feeling the same, you’re not crazy and you’re not alone.
Here are 3 things my patients find helpful in this stage:
1. Preparation, stop second guessing do your research know what type of procedure you are going to have, prepare your home and family, purchase equipment that will help you for example a cryo cuff is essential to manage your inflammation and pain … that first week is not an easy one but can be easily managed if you prepare correctly .

2. Physical : prepare your body , eat well hydrate yourself your amazing body will heal but it needs all the help it can get , stay as active as you can ,activate your glutes they are key to your prehab and rehab success!

3.Stop …. breathe …. Remember everyone’s hip replacement journey is different listen yo others however quietly take your time to prepare YOUR mind emotionally, don’t underestimate the power of you ,stay focused and ask for help you will be back doing all that you love very soon and you won’t even think about that ‘new hip ‘
Good luck my friends 🫶

Are you doing the correct exercises to help with your injuries?
Why “Just Exercising” isn’t always the answer to pain or injury
A lot of people think the solution to pain or injury is simple:
Stretch more. Strengthen more. Train harder.
But here’s the truth 👇
If your body is moving with imbalances or compensations, doing ordinary exercises can actually make your condition worse.
As a corrective exercise specialist and sports therapist, I start every client with a functional movement assessment. Why? Because pain rarely comes from where the real problem is.
🔹 A sore knee might be coming from poor hip control
🔹 A tight lower back may be caused by weak glutes or limited ankle mobility
🔹 Shoulder pain often stems from how your spine or hips move
When you train without addressing these underlying issues, your body simply finds ways to compensate—loading the wrong muscles, overworking joints, and reinforcing faulty movement patterns. Over time, this leads to more pain, more breakdown, and longer recovery.
A functional movement assessment allows me to: ✔️ Identify muscle imbalances
✔️ Spot mobility restrictions
✔️ See how your body actually moves under load
✔️ Create a plan that corrects the cause—not just the symptoms
This means: ➡️ Safer training
➡️ Faster progress
➡️ Better performance
➡️ Reduced risk of re-injury
Exercise is powerful—but only when it’s the right exercise, at the right time, for the right body.
If you’re stuck in a cycle of pain, setbacks, or “nothing seems to work,” it’s probably not because you’re weak or broken—it’s because your body needs a smarter approach.

A question I hear most often amongst the THR community is ‘ how do I avoid a limp after my surgery ?…… Well for some of you , having a limp may well have been very much ‘normal ‘ for you pre surgery … this does not have to be the case post surgery! Remember your walking aids are there for you to tolerate weight bearing and learning to trust your new hip …. It is very capable and strong … it’s the muscles around it that we need to strengthen and work with , in particular the hip abductors ( exercises previously posted )
Hip abductor weakness ( or termed as glutes ) encourage a trunk shift and compensation during walking ,causing a pelvic drop, resulting in a limp or Antalgic gait …. In other words this condition makes it very difficult to support the body’s weight on the affected side ( see below ) in walking or whenever we are transferring our weight from one leg to another. The message ?….. do not throw away your walking aids too quickly , complete your home exercise plans … progressively and with control …. Your new hip will love you for it ☺️ hope that helps 🙏
