What’s happening at Riverside this week…

We have plenty happening, from Pilates, yoga and movement to sports massage, alongside a growing focus on workplace wellbeing initiatives.

Because sometimes “we’re coping” just means everyone’s carrying too much but still cracking on.

We’re having more conversations with organisations about resilience, wellbeing at work and supporting people before things get to crisis point, which feels a lot more sensible than waiting until everyone’s frazzled.

Many of us treat rest like something that has to be earned. Get everything done first, then you’re allowed to stop.

The issue is, everything never gets done. There’s always something else that could be picked up, replied to, sorted. So you keep going. A bit tired and a bit fed up. You tell yourself you’ll have a proper break 'when things calm down'.

They don’t. You just get more tired and everything takes longer than it should. That’s where the importance of rest comes in, not at the end, but right from the start.

That’s why runs Nap Club at Riverside. It’s an hour to yourself to stop, relax and restore, without having to justify it or make it productive. No pressure to chat, no expectation to do anything with it. You come in, switch off, and go back out rested.

If you’re running on fumes, this is probably more useful than another push to “get on with it”!

Somewhere along the way, resilience got turned into just putting up with more.

Keep going, ignore it, deal with it later- It sounds useful - It usually isn’t.

If you’re always pushing through and telling yourself you’ll sort it out when things calm down, you’re not building resilience. You’re just putting off the point where it catches up with you. Resilience is knowing when to keep going and when to step back, before things start slipping.

Most people have been running past their limit for longer than they realise.

If that sounds familiar, it might be time to stop treating everything like it needs powering through. If this is how things have been feeling lately, it’s worth looking at properly. That’s exactly the kind of work we do at Riverside.

Most people don’t think twice about saying “I’m fine”.

It’s just the default. Quick answer, move on.

But for a lot of people, “fine” actually means getting through the day while feeling a bit tense, a bit wired, or mentally full.

That usually isn’t a one-off. It’s something that’s been building in the background for a while.

On Friday afternoon we welcome you to FEEL GOOD FRIDAY a monthly session ran by the impressive . A fully emmersive guided relaxation for children to help them to relax, reset and reground created especially for young people between 7-10 years old.

MOST PEOPLE DON'T NOTICE STRESS BUILDING:

They notice when they can’t switch off.

You carry on as normal. Go to work, get things done, deal with whatever’s in front of you.

Then your sleep goes a bit off and your brain decides 2am is the perfect time to run through everything you’ve ever said or done.

That’s usually when people realise something’s been building for a while.

April at Riverside we’re focusing on stress and resilience. Getting honest about what’s actually going on and how to get a bit of control back before it starts running the show.

WITH CLARE FROM FEELING SOUND

Practise gently focusing your attention during a guided meditation, which include immersing yourself in the soothing vibrations of a gong (and/or other musical instruments).

Our sessions are designed to promote deep relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance your overall well-being. No experience required, beginners are welcome.

But this isn't just any meditation session! These unique events weave sound, soundscapes and music within a guided meditative practice, perfect for those who are new or have previously struggled to meditate. Focusing on sound can offer us a softer, gentler entry route.

What to expect during a meditation class with us?
-Each session, we explore a variety of meditation techniques, so that you can begin to create a regular personalised practice at home, or wherever you need it.
-That might be visualisation, mindfulness, breathing meditations or something else.
-We take short breaks and chat in between the 3 or 4 practices, so there's time to breathe and relax over the course of the class.
-Sitting, lying down, standing, swaying or tapping - together we'll explore which posture is best for you.
-Afterwards you'll have access to some of our shorter guided meditation recordings so you can practice at home.

What is meditation?
• A moment to pause
• Techniques to help you sit with your mind
• Going to the gym for your mind - different techniques train our brains in different ways.
• An opportunity to 'stop identifying with movies of our mind' (Sharon Salzberg)
• 'Learn to sit in the fire with a steady and compassionate awareness' (Charlotte Joko Beck)

Stress builds in the background while you’re getting on with things. You carry on as normal, maybe a bit more irritable, sleeping a bit worse, your head busier than usual, everything taking more effort than it should.

Then you’re lying there at night thinking, “why can’t I just switch off?” That’s usually when it gets your attention.

April at Riverside is focused on stress and resilience. No buzzwords, just a proper look at what’s going on and how to deal with it before it gets to that point.
