This is false, generally! This is also dependent on many factors, but two major ones are what is their current health status and what was the reason for going to see you.

Muscles have a long memory. We know this from muscular disorders such as repetitive strain injury or tennis elbow. Holding muscles in a particular position, or a repetitive series of positions can cause stiffness and can interfere with the nerve pathways.

A well-trained therapist can address your pain patterns and re-educate the soft tissue to improve body mechanics and posture through a regular massage strategy. The keyword here is regular, to support change takes time, it requires re-education.

A typical scenario is a client will come to see me after spending many years establishing their pain pattern, I quickly inform them that this is not a one-stop-shop and it will take time to undo the process. But change is something the body is good at.

There is a great deal of debate around this however little proven scientific evidence that drinking water is essential after the massage therapy.

We all know it is important to stay hydrated and so it is likely to be beneficial to have a glass of water after therapy, especially as it will encourage you to move back into your day gently, but it does not flush out the toxins!

You can feel lightheaded after a massage due to the decrease in blood pressure, the increased water output (how many of your clients have to use the toilet after a massage?) and from lying down in a relaxed position for a time. Therefore taking a break to have a glass of water and rehydrate before getting on with your day is a positive action.

FALSE! Anyone who knows me and my work, will know that this is 100% false! Massages have many benefits, but the overarching one is that they are meant to aid healing.

Pain is the tool the body uses to tell you to stop what you are doing. It causes the muscles surrounding the area to tighten up, which is exactly the opposite of what a massage is trying to do.

Of course, sometimes when massaging a particularly stiff area it might be uncomfortable. The release of lactic acid can also leave people sore the day after, particularly if they lead a sedentary lifestyle. However, being too rough with muscles can actually damage them, which is counter-productive to the healing process.
