Did you know light plays a key role in mare fertility?

As daylight hours drop, mares naturally move into a transitional or anoestrous period meaning they may not cycle normally until the longer days of spring.

Using artificial lighting systems during the winter months helps mimic longer days, stimulating reproductive hormones and encouraging mares to begin cycling earlier. Here at Twemlows, our mares go under the lights through winter to ensure they start cycling by February.

This simple management tool can make a significant difference for studs planning early coverings or embryo work.

Biosecurity isn’t just a tick box exercise; it’s daily practice.

With visiting mares, foals, transported embryos and external stud work taking place year-round, maintaining a controlled and hygienic environment is essential for herd health and reproductive success.

From strict arrival protocols and vaccination requirements to routine disinfection and environmental monitoring, every stage of the process is designed to reduce disease risk and protect both resident and visiting horses.

Strong biosecurity doesn’t just safeguard outcomes, it safeguards welfare.

Every Thursday at Twemlows we welcome our farriers from Uppington Smithy to the farm to take care of our herd’s feet. They do everything from trimming the recipient mares to corrective trimming for foals with angular limb deformities, and they are an integral part of our team.

When mares come to Twemlows we take care of every aspect of their care, and we never ignore how fundamental good foot care is – after all, no foot no horse.

Routine maintenance like steaming and repainting is about more than keeping the stud looking smart...

It’s an essential part of protecting herd health, reducing bacterial load, and safeguarding every mare that comes through our doors. Biosecurity begins long before breeding season. By regularly deep-cleaning and refreshing our facilities, we create the safest possible environment for mares and foals.

Mares who stay with us while in foal receive the very best care from our yard staff and dedicated veterinary team. Part of this care includes the equine herpes vaccine, which all our pregnant mares receive at 5, 7 and 9 months of pregnancy.

𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (EHV-1) can cause abortion in pregnant mares. This extra vaccination helps build immunity to protect against the disease and reduces the risk of abortion. Alongside our vaccination programme we also ensure excellent management and biosecurity to reduce the risk.
