Soft tissue massage 🤲
In physiotherapy, massage is often used to help reduce pain, improve movement, and create a sense of relaxation.
But truthfully: the idea that we’re “breaking down knots,” “flushing toxins,” or physically changing tissue structure in a lasting way isn’t strongly supported by evidence.
However… there is certainly a place for it in the fitness population to aid recovery.
Massage works — just not always for the reasons people think.
✔️ It can calm the nervous system
✔️ It can reduce pain sensitivity
✔️ It can improve how safe and relaxed your body feels
✔️ It creates a window where movement feels easier
✔️Increases blood flow to certain areas to aid recovery and reduce DOMS
As physios, we often use soft tissue massage as a tool not the solution, which makes massage therapy a great adjunct treatment method. It helps set the stage for what really drives long-term change: movement, strength, and confidence in your body.
So if massage makes you feel better, that matters. Just remember it’s not “fixing” you it’s supporting you.
