“An evening of love" - Creating a Christmas Tradition at The Barns, Northwich.
Last night I was proud to have been a part of the annual Christmas Tree Blessing at The Barns in Davenham. This has become a tradition at The Barns to which the families of people who have passed away at The Barns are invited.
It was an incredibly moving event, perfectly described by the vicar as "an evening of love"
Families and people living in The Barns wrote personal messages to loved ones, and placed them inside baubles which were hung on the outdoor tree. The tree was blessed by the vicar who then read out the names of those who passed in the last year, keeping their memory alive.
With hymns sung and wine shared throughout the evening, the atmosphere was hopeful and warm.
What struck me most was the people in the room. Families who return year after year to help support each other at what could be a difficult time of the year. Many families returning for the third or fourth time - one family told me that this had become a part of their family tradition - for them Christmas begins when they visit The Barns for the tree blessing. Many brought with them the next generation of their family who were not even born when their loved one lived there.
Seeing a new born baby being held by the current Barns community really highlighted what a care home should be: a place for connection, and a home for a community.
When we get the culture right family members are not visitors, they belong.
The Activity Coordinator Sue told me that many families come to support her at home events and help with the activity program, long after their loved ones have passed.
Sue, and the staff and management on The Barns deserve all the credit in the world. For them care doesn't end when an individual dies, they honour the people they care for and make lasting bonds with all who call the Barns home.
