I find being AuDHD is quite a daily battle, it certainly makes my life more complex.

However my diagnosis does help me to understand myself better and provide some much needed answers.

Brian.

explains how ADHD and autism can overlap and why so many people identify with both.

While ADHD brains crave novelty and spontaneity, autistic brains often crave structure and predictability.
When both are present (known as AuDHD), life can feel like a constant tug-of-war between chaos and control.

💭 ADHD: restless, easily bored, time-blind
💭 Autism: needs routine, feels deeply, struggles with change
💜 AuDHD: hyperfocus and burnout cycles, sensory overwhelm, and the constant push-pull between craving structure but resisting it

This overlap doesn’t mean confusion. It means complexity, strength, and a brain that experiences the world intensely and uniquely.

Many Autistic people find bright lights uncomfortable, painful and overstimulating. Some light wavelengths can be worse than others.
For many people florescent lights can be really challenging. The buzz of the electricity can make it worse (especially if that person is sensitive to sound!)
Sunlight can feel painfully bright and intense. Outside there are also ‘louder colours’ and more contrast. It can quickly become overwhelming.

Many autistic girls grow up feeling isolated, never having the chance to meet another autistic girl who truly understands them.
Through our peer support groups, we’re changing that: building safe, affirming spaces where autistic girls and non-binary young people can connect, share, and thrive.
From 8–15 October, your donation will be DOUBLED thanks to the Big Give, meaning you can make twice the difference in helping us take peer support even further.
