In light of the recent news reports involving another local funeral director, we want to pause and reaffirm what truly matters: the respectful, gentle care of your loved ones.

At R Banks, we understand how deeply important it is to know that those you cherish are looked after with dignity. This is why we treat every loved one as though they were part of our own family.

Our team, many of whom have been with us for decades — with over 100 years of combined service — take pride in upholding the highest standards in funeral care. We carry out regular checks and continuous training to ensure we not only meet, but exceed, the expectations of the families who place their trust in us.

The recent stories in the press are heartbreaking, and our thoughts are with those affected. Moments like these remind us why our commitment to compassion, integrity, and transparency must remain unwavering.

We also want to make it absolutely clear that the funeral home named in the article has no affiliation whatsoever with R Banks. We are sharing public news only to reassure the families we care for and to reiterate our dedication to providing the highest level of service.

R Banks has long been a trusted, well-established family business, and we will continue to honour that responsibility every single day.

On behalf of our whole team, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who joined us at our memorial service this morning. Your presence, your support, and the shared moments of reflection meant so much. We hope that the service brought some comfort and peace as we move toward the festive season, a time that can be especially tender for many.

A very special thank you to Lynne, Nicola, and Lisa for organising today’s event with such care and compassion — not only for their hard work this morning, but for all they do throughout the year. Your dedication truly shines.

Our sincere thanks also go to Mount Zion Church for so kindly opening their doors to us, and to Barry Hart, Rev. Clive Doran, and Rev. Sam Swan for their thoughtful and comforting ministrations.

We are also grateful to Jennifer Halliwell for delivering today’s reading with such grace.

And finally, our heartfelt appreciation to the Pemberton Old Wigan Youth Band for the beautiful music that helped make today’s service so meaningful.

Thank you all for being part of a day filled with love, remembrance, and community.

With warmest regards,
Carina Halliwell Jones
Managing Director

Christmas Memorial Trees at R Banks & Son

As the festive season approaches, our branches will once again host our Christmas Memorial Trees — a special place for families to hang a message in memory of their loved ones.

Each year, we dedicate our trees to a chosen charity in honour of someone dear to a member of our team.

This year, we remember Dorothy Breheny, much-loved Nan to our colleagues Nicola and Lisa Disley. All donations will support Wigan and Leigh Hospice, a charity always supported by Dorothy.

You’re warmly invited to visit us, place a message on the tree, and, if you wish, make a donation in branch or online:

A small act of remembrance. A meaningful way to give.

Meet the Team: Maxine Dempsey!

For almost 4 years, Maxine has been a much-loved part of our team. She first joined us as a funeral home receptionist/arranger at our Platt Bridge branch… and then 2025 decided to test everyone’s patience.

After the devastating flood earlier this year Maxine didn’t hesitate. She rolled up her sleeves, put on her best “let’s-do-this” smile, and has been helping out across our Wigan and Leigh branches ever since.

Right now, she’s over in Leigh, keeping everything running smoothly and keeping Deb company — which, as you can imagine, is a full-time job in itself! 😉

Outside of work, Maxine is a devoted wife, proud mum, proud grandma, and the kind of friend everyone wishes they had. She’s always wearing a smile, always up for a good chat, and never turns down a chance for a getaway — whether that’s a sunny holiday abroad or a cosy break at the caravan.

Maxine, we appreciate you more than you know.
You’re dependable, reliable, fabulous with our families, and simply an all-round lovely human being.

Thank you for everything — you make us better every single day
